Philadelphia Eagles vs. Las Vegas Raiders Predictions

For old school bettors and football fans, this game should bring up memories of Super Bowl XV in the then Louisiana Superdome. Ron Jaworski and Jim Plunkett squared off on the bayou, with the latter tossing three touchdowns, including a pair to Cliff Branch. For the Eagles, a fourth quarter touchdown from Jaws to Keith Krepfle was their only strike of the day.

Who will be Sunday’s Branch and Krepfle, that’s the big question. Those were halcyon days for the Raiders, as the current version is in the midst of a bit of turmoil. Rich Bisaccia took over as interim head coach for the departed Jon Gruden, and the Raiders won against the Broncos in Denver last week to put a bow on a most difficult week. This is the first home game minus Chucky.

The Eagles put up a valiant effort at home against the Buccaneers last Thursday. After falling behind 28- 7, the Eagles saw QB Jalen Hurts run for a score to make it 28-14 heading to the fourth quarter. An analytics decision came up in the fourth with just under six minutes to go. Hurts ran a second score in, and then hit Quez Watkins for a two-point conversion to make it 28-22. For bettors of the Buccaneers, laying either 6.5 or 7, it was a devastating decision, as that’s how the game ended.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-4
  • ATS: 3-3
  • O/U: 2-4
  • ATS - Home: 1-2
  • ATS - Away: 2-1

The Eagles haven’t been getting great production from Hurts through the air, as he has just 313 passing yards across the past two games. But he has rushed for four scores during the span, and five touchdowns overall this season.

The Eagles opened the season with a 32-6 win on the road against the Atlanta Falcons, and Philly has posted a 2-1 SU/ATS mark in three games on the road, while going 0-3 SU/1-2 ATS at home. The UNDER is also 2-1 in three games on the road for Philly.

Defense has been keeping the Eagles in games, as they have allowed just 347.2 total yards per game to rank 11th in the NFL, and Philly is fifth in passing yards allowed with 211.8 yards per game. If Philly has an Achilles’ heel, it’s against the run, allowing 135.3 yards per game on the ground.

Despite some success on the road this season, Philly has managed to go just 2-7 ATS in the past nine games on the road overall, and 2-5 ATS in the past seven as a road underdog, however. Of course, a huge chunk of those failures are on the record of QB Carson Wentz, who is now plying his trade in Indianapolis. Hurts has produced the two covers.

Las Vegas Raiders Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 4-2
  • ATS: 3-3
  • O/U: 3-3
  • ATS - Home: 1-2
  • ATS - Away: 2-1

The Broncos, not the Raiders, appeared to be the team distracted last Sunday in the Mile High City. QBDerek Carr and the Raiders were business-like, organized and about as focused as a team can be after a week of tumult. Las Vegas opened a 24-7 lead and never looked back, racking up 340 passing yards, 86 yards on the ground and they were able to record five sacks, too.

Vegas has been tremendous offensively, going for 26 or more points in four of six outings. The Raiders had a hiccup in Los Angeles against the Chargers in Week 4, and in Gruden’s last game in Week 5 against the Bears at home. Now that the clouds have disappeared, and it’s back to business, this looks like a relaxed and focused team like we saw in the first three weekends of NFL football.

However, the big concern is the inability to stop the run. The Raiders need to be able to at least slow down Hurts and keep him out of the end zone, something the Panthers and Buccaneers haven’t been able to do in the past two weeks.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Las Vegas Raiders Betting Conclusion

I like the fact the Eagles have had a couple of extra days to rest their bumps and bruises, and to focus on the Raiders. If this game were in Philadelphia, I think it would be a slam-dunk play on the Eagles. As it stands, I like the visitors to win outright. The Bears were able to have success by running the football against the Raiders, while using a suffocating brand of defense. The Eagles have a very similar make-up to Chicago, and will likely follow the same playbook.

The Raiders are going to struggle to contain Hurts, who should be able to pierce the end zone for at least one more rushing touchdown, if not two more. And I expect he’ll total at least three touchdowns.

For the home side, they have passed the ball early and often. But the Eagles have been a brick wall defensively, allowing just 211.8 passing yards per game to rank fifth in the NFL. I think the lack of run defense for the Raiders, and the strong pass defense of the Eagles is what sees the visitors to an outright road win.
