New York Jets vs. Houston Texans Predictions

Although the Houston Texans are 2-8, they have been more competitive than most teams with that record. Houston has covered half of its games, while the New York Jets are 2-8 ATS and have yet to cover a game away from home. The Jets have only kept one road game within 14 points, and that was in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.

No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson will return to the starting lineup for the New York Jets this week. We haven’t seen Wilson in action since the Jets were blown out by the New England Patriots in Week 7, and his rookie woes are likely to continue against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

New York Jets Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-8
  • ATS: 2-8
  • O/U: 6-4
  • ATS - Home: 2-3
  • ATS - Away: 0-5

Joe Flacco and Mike White have both been ruled out for this game due to COVID. That means that Josh Johnson will be called up from the practice squad to back up Wilson on Sunday.

Wilson has had a subpar rookie season. He is completing just 57.5% of his passes for 1,168 yards (6.5 YPA) with four touchdowns and nine interceptions. Wilson has been sacked 19 times in his six games, and his only good game was against Tennessee back in early October.

Starting running back Michael Carter will miss at least the next two weeks with a sprained ankle. Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson will split the carries for the Jets as a result, and Coleman is averaging just 3.9 YPC while Johnson is averaging just 3.4 YPC.

Top receiver Corey Davis is questionable to play with a groin injury, but Davis is expected to be ready according to Robert Saleh. Rookie Elijah Moore has been red hot over the last three weeks though with 18 receptions for 269 yards and four touchdowns.

Unfortunately, the Jets rank dead last in the league by most defensive metrics. Gang Green is dead last in scoring defense (32.0 PPG), total defense (414.2 YPG), and yards per play (6.3 YPP). Starting safeties Marcus Maye and Lamarcus Joyner are both on IR, and star linebacker C.J. Mosley is questionable to play.

Houston Texans Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-8
  • ATS: 5-5
  • O/U: 4-6
  • ATS - Home: 3-1
  • ATS - Away: 2-4

Tyrod Taylor has now struggled for the second straight game after coming off injured reserve. Taylor threw three interceptions and was sacked five times against Miami two weeks ago, and he averaged just 4.5 YPA last week against Tennessee. Houston didn’t have a play longer than 13 yards in that game but still got the win.

This offense has been the worst in the NFL. Houston ranks dead last in scoring offense (15.0 PPG0, total offense (271.1 YPG), and yards per play (4.6 YPP). The ground game has been abysmal, averaging 3.2 YPC, so something has to give against the Jets.

Brandin Cooks leads the Texans with 59 receptions for 659 yards and two touchdowns. No one else on Houston has more than 235 receiving yards though. Cooks will once again be Taylor’s top target on Sunday.

Houston has not been great on defense this season. The Texans rank 30th in both scoring defense and total defense, but they have forced 14 fumbles and have 13 interceptions. The loss of Christian Kirksey hurts, but Zach Cunningham continues to play well.

New York has failed to cover the spread in five straight road games. (AP)

There won’t be a lot of scoring in this game, but the Texans will be able to prevail over a rookie quarterback that has proven to be mistake prone. Take the UNDER of the two bets here.
