Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New York Jets Predictions

The Jaguars enter week 16 trying to snap a six-game losing streak. After firing Urban Meyer it's clear that Jacksonville is ready for this season to be over. As of Friday, Jacksonville currently has three starters on the COVID list including, DE/LB Josh Allen, WR Laviska Shenault Jr., and right guard Ben Bartch. With games left against New England and Indianapolis remaining, this may be the Jaguars last chance for a W.

New York will look to avoid a four-game losing streak after losing to the Dolphins last week, 31-24. The Jets have 16 players and head coach Robert Saleh on the Covid list as of Friday. If Coach Saleh is unable to return to the sidelines this week, the interim head coach will be tight ends coach Ron Middleton.

This should be an interesting game to say the least. If this were a normal week, I would lay the points with the Jets. However, with the Jets potentially missing 16 players due to COVID, and the possibility of QB Zach Wilson missing his top three receivers (injuries not COVID), I can find no good reason to back the Jets. Backing the road dogs in this matchup, Jacksonville +2/Moneyline

Jacksonville Jaguars Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-12
  • ATS: 4-10
  • O/U: 3-11
  • ATS - Away: 2-4

Jacksonville has been terrible ATS with a 4-10 record. The Jaguars have managed to cover in nine of the last 12 games played against the Jets, leaving a little hope for those looking to back Jacksonville. With a 3-11 O/U record Jacksonville has struggled to score the ball this season. Recent games against the Jets have gone the opposite way, going over in four of the last five when playing the Jets on the Road. The Jaguars have been one of the worst offenses in the league and they have the numbers to prove it.

Coming into this matchup they are averaging 302.6 total YPG (31st), 199.6 passing YPG (28th), 103 rushing YPG (22nd), and 14 PPG (32nd). RB James Robinson will need to get the ground game going to take pressure off rookie QB Trevor Lawrence.

Jacksonville’s defense has played better than the offense but have still struggled on the season. On the season they are allowing 351.8 total YPG (20th), 239 passing YPG (17th), 112.8 rushing YPG (18th), and 26.4 PPG (28th). The key will be holding New York to field goals when in the red zone, as the Jags have struggled in that department up to this point.

New York Jets Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 3-11
  • ATS: 4-10
  • O/U: 8-6
  • ATS - Home: 2-5

The Jets are in the same boat as the Jaguars when it comes to covering with a 4-10 ATS record. The Jets are 4-2 SU in the last six games against Jacksonville, but managed to cover in just two of those games. The total has gone over in eight games played for the Jets this season, and has gone over in four of the last six Jets home games.

New York’s offense ranks better than Jacksonville but still poorly compared to the rest of the league. Entering week 16 they are averaging 314.9 total YPG (22nd), 229.4 passing YPG (15th), 85.4 rushing YPG (30th), and 17.9 PPG (27th). The Jets will already be without starting WR Corey Davis (out), WR Elijah Moore (IR), and now WR Jamison Crowder could be out as well with a calf injury. If QB Wilson is without his three main targets, the Jets could find themselves in some deep trouble come Sunday.

The Jets defense is arguably the worst in the NFL. Allowing an average of 391.8 total YPG (32nd), 249.9 passing YPG (27th), 141.9 rushing YPG (30th), and 30.6 PPG (32nd). New York may be without five starters on defense due to COVID, depending on who can test negative in time to return. I guess the good news for the Jets is that the defense cannot be much worse than it actually is.

Jaguars have lost 15 straight road games. (AP)

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New York Jets Betting Conclusion

This is setting up to be a bad football game. We could see two interim head coaches on the sideline, and the Jets are just hoping to have 53 men on their roster come game time. I think the only play in this one is to back the Jags. If you want to be on the safe side take the points, but there is value in the Moneyline here for sure.

The total is set at 41.5 (as of 12/24) and I have no real feel for it. I don’t expect a ton of points to be scored, but at the same time there is so much uncertainty in this one that it could very well go over.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New York Jets Betting Trends

  • Jaguars have lost 15 straight road games.
  • Jaguars have gone UNDER the point total in eight of its last nine games.
  • Jaguars have failed to cover the spread in five straight games.
