Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Carolina Panthers Predictions

Tampa Bay is coming off a 9-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints, making it the first time QB Tom Brady has been shut out in 15 years. Give credit to the Saints defense, but the Bucs also saw key offensive members get injured including WR Mike Evans (remains questionable), WR Chris Godwin (placed on IR), and RB Leonard Fournette (placed on IR). WR Antonio Brown will return to the lineup after serving a suspension for a fake vaccination card, and the Bucs signed RB Le'Veon Bell this week as well.

The Panthers have lost four straight after losing to the Bills last week, 31-14. QB Cam Newton remains the starter with a 1-4 record. However, head coach Matt Rhule says that QB Sam Darnold will also see some action after being cleared for contact this past Tuesday. RB Christian McCaffrey is still out after suffering a season ending injury a few weeks back leaving RB Chuba Hubbard as the starter.

It should be interesting to see how the Bucs offense functions this week. Antonio Brown has not played since the second week of October, while Bell has not suited up since November 11th with the Baltimore Ravens. While they may not make immediate impacts, Brady has had a week to adapt and adjust to the injuries. The guy is a master at instilling the next man up the next man up mantra into his teammates which is why I like Brady and the Bucs in a bounce back win plus cover.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 10-4
  • ATS: 7-7
  • O/U: 7-7
  • ATS - Away: 2-5

The Buccaneers are 7-7 ATS on the year, but have struggled to cover on the road with just a 2-5 ATS record. Good news for bettors looking to back the Bucs is they are 4-1 ATS in the last five games on the road against Carolina. The total has gone under in four of the last six road games for Tampa Bay. The opposite trend has occurred in recent games against Carolina as the total has gone over in four of the last six when playing Carolina.

Tampa Bay’s offense ranks as one of the best, if not the best in the league. On the season they are averaging 402.4 total YPG (2nd), 304.9 passing YPG (1st), 97.6 rushing YPG (25th), and 29.3 PPG (1st). With Godwin out and if Evans and questionable, one can only assume that TE Rob Gronkowski is poised to have a big week. How Brown and Bell will play? No one knows, but Brady and Gronk will make sure business gets taken care of.

The Buccaneers defense ranks middle of the pack compared to the rest of the NFL. Tampa Bay is allowing 333.6 total YPG (12th), 244.6 (21st), 89 rushing YPG (3rd), and 21.9 PPG (14th). The key to the Bucs defense this week will be creating turnovers. Tampa Bay has created 25 turnovers on the year while Carolina has turned the ball over 24 times. A couple of turnovers could be huge for the Bucs on Sunday.

Carolina Panthers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 5-9
  • ATS: 5-9
  • O/U: 7-7
  • ATS - Home: 2-5

The Panthers have not given bettors many reasons to back them at this point in the season. Carolina is 5-9 ATS on the year and are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games. The total has gone over seven times for the Panthers including the past five. As well as the total going over in four of the last six games against Tampa Bay.

Carolina’s offense ranks poorly among the rest of the NFL. Entering week 16 they are averaging 308.1 total YPG, 195.4 passing YPG (29th), 112.6 rushing YPG (16th), and 19.4 PPG (25th). Bad news for the Panthers is that Pat Elflein (C) and Dennis Daley (G) have been placed on the COVID list. This is not good for any kind of rushing attack the Panthers may have had planned as the Bucs defensive line has been dominate all season long.

Carolina’s defense ranks much better than the offense does. On the season the Panthers are allowing 294.4 total YPG (2nd), 178.8 passing YPG (2nd), 115.6 rushing YPG (20th), and 22.4 PPG (18th). If the Panthers want a shot at this game the defense will need to be at their best. The cards are somewhat in their favor with all the uncertainty surrounding Tampa Bay’s offense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Carolina Panthers Betting Conclusion

Out of all the significant injuries the Bucs are facing on offense one might wonder why you would trust the Bucs at –10. I’ll give you two reasons, first is Brady, and the second is Gronkowski. The Panthers may be able to slow the Bucs down a bit but on the offensive side of the ball, but they just don’t have the fire power to compete with the Bucs. Rolling with Brady and the Bucs at –10.
