How to Bet Puck-Line Odds

Hockey will occasionally have favorites listed with high money line prices, either due to a lopsided matchup based upon the standings or a goaltender matchup which is rather uneven. Heavy favorites are fairly common, making the money-line wagers very risky. You must risk a large stake for a little return. As such, puck-line wagers can be a much better value, as you will select the favorite to win by a spread, more often than not at 1 ½ goals, and you will risk less than on the money-line. You can also bet underdogs on the puck-line.

Boston -1 ½ +180 (Bet $100 to win $180)
Montreal +1 ½ -195 (Bet $100 to win $51.30)

In the example listed above, Boston is listed considered the favorite (-), while Montreal is considered the underdog. If you were to select the Bruins, who need to win by at least two goals, they would cash a winning ticket of $280, which includes a $180 win and your original $100 stake. The fractional odds for the bet listed above would be 9/5, with the decimal format listed at 2.8.

If you were to select the Canadiens in this particular situation, it is basically insurance because you do not think Montreal has much of a chance to win outright. The Canadiens can still lose by one goal and cash a winning ticket since the Habs would still cover the 'spread'. In the example listed, a $100 winning wager on the Canadiens would return a total of just $51.30. The fractional odds for the wager above would be 20/39. and the decimal conversion, which is commonly used overseas, would have Montreal listed at 1.513.
