CAROLINA HURRICANES vs. BOSTON BRUINS PREDICTIONS

The series shifts to New England after a pair of convincing victories for the favored Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena in Raleigh in Games 1 and 2. Carolina opened with a 5-1 victory behind Antti Raanta in Game 1, and posted a 5-2 victory in Game 2 despite losing Raanta to an upper-body injury in the first period after a collision with David Pastrnak. Rookie Pyotr Kochetkov came on and did a tremendous job in a difficult situation, keeping the Canes on track.

Carolina has now outscored Boston 16-1 during the regular season, and 10-3 so far during the postseason, an average winning margin of 4.4 goals per game.

Raanta wasn't the only player to suffer an injury in Game 2, as Hampus Lindholm was crushed in the corner by Andrei Svechnikov, also suffering an apparent upper-body injury. The status for Raanta and Lindholm for Game 3 is uncertain. If Raanta cannot play, and Frederik Andersen is not yet ready, the rookie Kochetkov would make his first NHL playoff start.

CAROLINA HURRICANES BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 56-20-8
  • ATS: 43-41
  • O/U: 39-41-4

The Hurricanes boat-raced the Bruins in both games down in North Carolina, but the series shifts to TD Garden which has been a house of horrors for the Canes in recent seasons. While Carolina won Jan. 18 in Boston by a 7-1 score, in one of the final starts ever by Tuukka Rask, and it won 6-0 on Feb. 10, the Canes are still just 3-9 in the past 12 trips overall. However, what the Hurricanes have done in this current season outweighs what was done in recent seasons, especially since they played in the Central Division last season due to the COVID realignment, and hadn't been to Beantown since Aug. 19, 2020 prior to Jan. 18.

The Canes have won eight straight overall, so they're due for a setback soon, right? Of course they'll be looking to win every game, but realistically, a split in Boston would be nice, taking a 3-1 series lead back to Carolina for Game 5. The Canes have won four in a row on the road, but they're just 2-5 in the past seven as a road 'dog, and 2-8 in the past 10 playoff games as a 'dog.

For totals, the OVER is 5-0 in the past five games overall, while cashing at a 3-0-1 clip as an underdog. The OVER is also 5-1 in the past six games on the road, and 7-3 in the past 10 in the Conference Quarterfinals Round.

BOSTON BRUINS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 51-28-5
  • ATS: 33-51
  • O/U: 38-39-7

The Bruins have not only lost all five meetings against the Hurricanes this season, they've lost by an average of 4.4 goals per game. For whatever reason the B's just don't match up well with the Canes. They can't match up well with the Canes. And Boston has been unable to take advantage of the fact the starting goalie Andersen, whom they have had great success against during his days in Toronto, has been out. A rookie, Kochetkov, making his first NHL playoffs appearance in relief in Game 2, shut them down.

The B's will hope a little home cooking snaps them back to winning form. Boston is 37-18 in the past 55 games at home, while going 35-16 in the past 51 as a home favorite. They're also 40-17 in the past 57 overall when favored.

For totals, the UNDER is 8-3-2 in the past 13 overall for the B's, while going 4-1-2 in the past seven when favored. The UNDER is 5-0-1 in the past six at TD Garden for the B's, too.

CAROLINA HURRICANES vs. BOSTON BRUINS PREDICTIONS

I think that the venue change is going to help the Bruins immensely. Playing on the road at PNC Arena is a difficult assignment, as when the Hurricanes are rolling along, the decibel level makes it one of the loudest buildings in the NHL. TD Garden is a crazy barn, too, and the B's will be spurred on by their fans creating a hostile environment for Carolina. But crowd noise and adrenaline can only get you so far, and the Hurricanes have taken the crowd out of it early in two blowout wins in Boston this season, outscoring the B's 13-1 in their own building.

The Hurricanes have some uncertainty in the crease, as Kochetkov might be tasked with making his first-ever NHL playoff start. While that's certainly major, don't overlook Lindholm's injury for the Bruins. If he is unable to return, that's a giant loss along their blueline, and that's why he was added at the NHL trade deadline, to shore up a defense which was lacking badly. We might also see Jeremy Swayman get his first NHL postseason start, too. If that's the case, it will be rookie-on-rookie in the cages, and that's essentially a wash.

You have to roll with the hotter team right now, and that's easily the Hurricanes. I think we see a lot more defense, but the game result will be the same.
