Legal Sports Betting in New Hampshire Continues to Expand

Betting on sports and sporting events in New Hampshire has been legal since 2019. As part of a unique and exclusive arrangement with the state, DraftKings is the only legal sportsbook operator. This was the 14th state in the US to offer legal sports betting in some form.
Another unique aspect of betting on sports legally in New Hampshire is the minimum age. While most states have set the age requirement to 21, bettors only have to be 18 to place a legal sports bet.
The industry is governed and regulated by the New Hampshire Lottery Commission – Division of Sports Wagering. The only restriction still in place is a ban on wagering on in-state college and university athletics.
New Hampshire offers legal sports betting through retail sportsbooks as well as online through a mobile betting app. DraftKings is the sole operator for each of these options.
Working with the NH Lottery and Filotimo Casino & Restaurant, DraftKings opened a retail sportsbook in Manchester. This is the biggest city in the state for legal sports betting.
Earlier this year, the Boston-based operator expanded its retail footprint with plans to open another location in conjunction with the Filotimo Casino & Restaurant in Dover. As with the location in Manchester, this will be a true sports bar with a family feel to the venue.
This would be DraftKings’ third retail sportsbook in the state. The other operation is the DraftKings Sportsbook at the Brook in Seaview.
Most of the sports betting handle in the state is generated through the mobile betting app. In September of this year, New Hampshire set a new state record for sports betting volume. The total betting handle was $68.1 Million.
While this is not one of the biggest legal betting markets in the US, New Hampshire has shown steady growth from year to year. State gaming figures point out that 74% of the betting volume is online with the retail segment accounting for the other 26%.
DraftKings does pay a hefty premium for its sports betting monopoly. The state tax rate on sports betting revenue is 50% at retail locations and 51% online. All proceeds to the state benefit New Hampshire public education.
The legal sports betting industry in New Hampshire is an excellent example of how a hybrid system can work in a small state. By bringing in a commercial operator to work with the state’s lottery, the mobile betting app offer is guaranteed to be a quality product.
