Just when I was thinking about what an uneventful weekend we had in sports, the news breaks early Monday that the Bears have waived Tank Johnson.
Turns out, Johnson pulled a Pac-Man, getting pulled over "slightly impaired" at 3:30 a.m. Friday morning. Can you say idiot?!
Give credit to the Bears for stepping up and ridding themselves of this headache. Now if the Titans would just do the same thing. Seriously, what are they waiting for, his next arrest? Don't worry, it'll be here before we know it.
**Quick Hits**
--R.I.P. Rod Beck (1968-2007), who passed away Saturday in Phoenix. Beck was as "old-school" as it gets, living out of an RV beyond left field drinking beers with fans post-game while trying to work his way back to the majors during a minor-league stint in Iowa a few years back. "Shooter" had more saves than any closer in baseball from 1993-'98.
--Unless Ozzie Guillen really does something stupid in the next week or so (very possible), the White Sox shouldn't pink slip him. Didn't he lead his team to a World Series title two seasons ago? Yes. Next topic...
--So Bears DT Tommie Harris calls out Rex Grossman last week. Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Harris on the sidelines during the playoffs last year? Wasn't he in street clothes at money time? And now he's calling out teammates? Please.
--I bought my Phil Steele magazine the other day. It'll be right next to me for the next six months.
--I've been a Hawks fan since before the starting lineup was 'Nique, Doc Rivers, Randy Whittman, Kevin Willis and Tree Rollins (those were the days!) in the mid-'80s. But my NBA squad hasn't tasted the playoffs since Pete Babcock blew up the team in '99 by trading Steve Smith and Mookie Blaylock. So why do I even bring this up? Because for the first time since the Knicks were sweeping Atlanta in the second round of the '99 playoffs, I've got a reason to be nervous/anxious. The Hawks own picks No. 3 and 11 in Thursday's draft and to be honest, I'm extremely nervous! Thursday night will set the tone for the Hawks for the next 5-10 years. Will GM Billy Knight get it done? For the sake of Cal Bowdler, Ed Gray and Priest Lauderdale, I sure as hell hope so!
