With one night and three games in the books, I have a few comments to make. For starters, what a tough way to start the season by backing the Rockets and getting backdoored in the final minute.
I backed Houston minus 4 1/2 and Rick Adelman's team appeared poised to cash tickets with a 10-point lead with under two minutes left. However, the Lakers went on a 10-0 run sparked by the Cry-Baby-Who-Made-His-Bed-But-Doesn't-Want-To-Sleep-In-It Bryant.
With the game knotted at 92, Shane Battier drained a 26-footer from the right wing for the game-winner, but the Lakers took down the cash.
I'm looking to bounce back with three plays in my pick pack for tonight, including a guaranteed selection. Remember, I finished No. 2 on VI last year with more than 14 units of profit.
Back to the games, as the defending champs got their rings and knocked off Portland, 106-97. Nevertheless, the Trail Blazers covered the number as 13-point underdogs at San Antonio. LaMarcus Aldridge had a big-time peformance with 27 points, while youngsters Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster were also impressive.
Utah dealt out woodshed treatment in the form of a 117-96 win at Golden St. Carlos Boozer was a man among boys in the paint, scoring 32 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Keep in mind that Golden State's Stephen Jackson will miss six more games due to a suspension.
As for tonight's eight-game card, let's go over a few injuries of note. Chicago will be without rookie Joakim Noah (ankle) and Ben Wallace (ankle) is "questionable." The Bulls are 2 1/2-point 'dogs at New Jersey.
Indiana plays host to Washington. Troy Murphy is "doubtful," while Jermaine O'Neal is a question mark.
Dallas is at Cleveland as a 3 1/2-point 'chalk.' Josh Howard (suspension) and Erick Dampier are "out."
Good luck with your bets!
