Florida State is dealing with 'L's galore, an academic scandal and now this... I'm told Florida State President T.K. Weatherall is currently in discussions with Jimbo Fisher to keep him with the Seminoles instead of accepting an offer to become Rich Rodriguez's replacement at West Virginia.
Talk about a potential black eye for the Bowden Empire!
There's a $2.5 million buyout in the contract Fisher signed with FSU just a few weeks ago, but the Mountaineers are playing with four million they are due from Michigan. Also, two big developments have emerged since Fisher was announced as Bobby Bowden's eventual successor.
First, the football program's involvement in a cheating scandal has turned out to be a lot worse than previously suspected. NCAA punishment could be looming and more than a dozen players are going to be suspended for the first three games of the 2008 season.
Fisher is from West Virginia. Pat White is at WVU, while Drew Weatherford is at FSU.
To me, this decision looks easy. Wait for Bobby Bowden at least one year, probably two and possibly even three, or become a head coach today at a program that has more talent?
Yes, FSU is the better program than West Virginia in the long run, but not right now. The ship is sinking in Tallahassee and who could blame Jimbo for wanting to jump?
Adding intrigue to the situation is that if Fisher says no to the Mountaineers, then Terry Bowden is expected to get the job. If he says yes, it'll be a long night for the Bowdens.
