Just as the old adage goes...fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...shame on me!
According to ESPN and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Falcons owner Arthur Blank is in hot pursuit of USC head coach Pete Carroll, who will reportedly sit down with Blank today.
Also, ESPN is reporting that Blank is prepared to offer Carroll full control of football operations. Sound familiar?
Didn't the Miami Dolphins just make this same mistake with Nick Saban? Didn't Blank already go the college route with Bobby the Backstabbin-Betrayer?
Obviously, Carroll has been an enormous success at USC during an incredible seven-year tenure, but that's college football. If we've learned anything over the last decade, it's that college and the NFL are different beasts. See Steve Spurrier, Saban, Petrino and Dennis Erickson as recent examples.
Carroll wasn't a horrible head coach with the Jets and Patriots, but he did take a pink slip from both jobs. He's been in the college ranks for almost a decade now. Seriously, is this the guy Blank thinks will reinvigorate his sinking franchise? Does he really feel like bringing a California boy to the Deep South will fill the stands vacated by fans still wearing Michael Vick jerseys?
For the record, I think Carroll is too smart to leave USC for this mess. Surely he is, right?
Then again, sometimes money talks and bs walks.
And sometimes Blank checks don't always cash.
