Mike Smith has hired Mike Mularkey and Brian Van Gorder as his offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively. Mularkey comes to the Falcons after spending two seasons with the Dolphins.
Mularkey, who played college football at Florida in the early 1980s, is the former head coach of the Bills. He made his name as the offensive coordinator for the Steelers before leaving for Buffalo.
Van Gorder spent last season as Atlanta's linebackers coach on Bobby Petrino's staff. In December, Van Gorder bolted to take the defensive coordinator job on Steve Spurrier's staff at South Carolina.
His stint in Columbia barely lasted a month. This is Van Gorder's first job as a coordinator in the NFL. He made a name for himself during his successful four-year stint as Georgia's defensive coordinator under Mark Richt.
Smith has also retained Emmitt Thomas (associate head coach) and Bill Musgrave (QBs coach) from the Falcons' 2007 staff.
