I gave an updated Top 50 in college football each week last year, but we -- as in me -- have decided to chop that down to Top 30 this year. These rankings are based on who I'd favor on a neutral field if the games were played tomorrow. With that in mind, here's this year's pre-season Top 30.
1-Florida 2-USC 3-Georgia 4-Missouri 5-Oklahoma 6-Clemson 7-Ohio St. 8-West Va. 9-Auburn 10-Texas 11-LSU 12-South Fla. 13-Fresno St. 14-Penn St. 15-Texas Tech 16-Wisconsin 17-South Carolina 18-Wake Forest 19-Arizona St. 20-Va. Tech 21-Tennessee 22-Pittsburgh 23-Alabama 24-Oregon 25-California 26-Rutgers 27-Oklahoma St. 28-Utah 29-BYU 30-Kansas
**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**
--Big Ten sleeper squad: Michigan State. The Spartans have a workhorse RB (Javon Ringer), a better-than-decent senior QB (Brian Hoyer) and a schedule that sets up for a potential 6-1 start going into an Oct. 18 date against Ohio St. in East Lansing.
--C-USA team to watch: East Carolina. The Pirates get an early-season chance to make a major splash on the national radar. They take on Va. Tech in Charlotte in their opener and get a shot against West Va. in Greenville the following week.
--Joshua Jarboe, who was dismissed from Oklahoma's program after he made the Internet with a rap video containing explicit lyrics, has transferred to Troy.
--Steve Spurrier wasn't happy with South Carolina QB Tommy Beecher's play at Wednesday's scrimmage.
