--Just like I said at the VI Seminar this past weekend, Florida's Percy Harvin is going to miss the season opener against Hawaii. Furthermore, it's looking more likely that the Gators will allow Harvin to sit against Miami and then also have the open date to prep for the SEC opener at Tennessee on Sept. 20. Also, LB Brandon Spikes is "out" against the Warriors.
--Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson has named Chris Nickson as the team's starting quarterback. The Commodores are four-point underdogs tonight at Miami (OH.).
--Shameless Plug: I finished the 2007 season on a 19-8 run, guiding "dime players" to $10,300 of profit. I picked up where I left off with Thursday's easy winner backing the HeadBallCoach (HBC) in a 34-bagel delivery to another scrub ACC squad. Click here for my pick for tonight. I also have several selections for Saturday.
--As I've said many times, I'm not a big fan of teasers. However, I will play a teaser if/when I can get a pair of home teams favored between six and 8 1/2, bumping both down to just need to win outright or by a field goal. I think Missouri and Ole Miss fit this criteria this weekend (Mizzou game on neutral field, but at least Tigers not on the road). I'll be on a Rebels-Tigers teaser.
--I liked Michigan State catching seven at Cal when LVSC released the opening numbers. With that said, I can't seem to pull the trigger with the Spartans now just 4 1/2-point 'dogs. Whether I end up playing them this weekend or not, they are my sleeper team in the Big Ten. I love the workhorse RB Javon Ringer.
--Another play I'm getting gun-shy with is Oklahoma State. The Cowboys have a dynamic QB in Zac Robinson, and there's really nothing about Washington St. to get you excited. Still, I'm hesitant to lay a touchdown on the road in an opener when OSU has to travel to Seattle and face a team with a new coach. Just too many question marks about the Cougars. Oklahoma St. will probably roll and I'll be kicking myself Saturday night.
--I've been saying for weeks how much the absence of DE Greg Hardy will hurt Ole Miss early in the year. Turns out, the defensive line as a hole is hurting.
--Former LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has one last chance to get it right. He could've been the starting QB for the defending national champs. Instead, he'll get the starting nod tonight when Jacksonville State plays at Georgia Tech in a non-board game. Next week, JSU will take on Appalachian State. That means he'll watch film of his former teammates as he preps for the Mountaineers all next week.
--According to LVSC's Kenny White, there are two places to make wagers on the LSU-App St. game. Lucky's has LSU listed as a 22 1/2-point favorite, while the Las Vegas Hilton has LSU favored by 25.
--I know the line has now dipped to nine or 9 1/2 at some books, but if you can "buy the hook" to 10 or got in your wager earlier in the week, you'll be glad to know that East Carolina is 7-1 ATS in eight games as a double-digit underdog under Skip Holtz.
--Great line from my buddy Will Haraway (of the Sun Dogs) the other day: "A-Rod is playing Like A Virgin."
