According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Josh Childress has opted to return to Greece for a second season. Childress, who signed a three-year, $20 million deal to play in Europe last year, had flirted with the idea of returning to the NBA. He had until Wednesday to opt out of his contract. The Hawks retain his rights and reportedly discussed a sign-and-trade deal with Milwaukee that didn't pan out. As long as Atlanta extends Childress a qualifying offer next off-season, it will again retain his rights and can get compensation by trading him.
Also, the Hawks announced yesterday that Mike Bibby (3 years, $18 million) and Zaza Pachulia (4 years, $19 million) are coming back. Both players were unrestricted free agents who by all accounts never considered going elsewhere. Atlanta is still working on a deal to re-ink restricted free agent Marvin Williams.
Multiple reports are linking Allen Iverson and the Clippers as having "serious talks." What is Mike Dunleavy thinking there? Why would you want another high-volume shooter in the backcourt and a possible bad attitude to negatively influence young studs like Al Thornton, Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin?
Other Tuesday morning items...
--This is so classic: North Alabama (in Florence, right next to Greenbo!) head coach Terry Bowden tells brother Jeff to "break out his bling" for a speaking engagement. Turns out, the bling wasn't a national-title ring but instead a 2004 Gator Bowl ring. Oh brother, how the Bowdens have fallen.
--For you West Virginia and Marshall fans in the Charleston area, I'll be a guest on Dave Weekley's sports-radio show (WCHS-AM 580) Wednesday night at 7:15 p.m. Eastern.
--I thought UFC 100 was outstanding! Each UFC event pulls me in more and leaves me salivating at the prospects of future matchups. As for Brock Lesnar's antics, I was fine with them. And as for that extra eye dot from Dan Henderson, I was ok with that, too. Check out Steve Cofield's MMA blog on Yahoo! Sports for all the latest UFC news, including Randy Couture's comments yesterday about Lesnar (and his wife).
