WNBA seeks to add Bay Area team in 2011
December 8, 2009
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -WNBA president Donna Orender says the league will seek to add a team to the Bay Area for the 2011 season.
Orender said in a statement Tuesday that a number of potential investors had come forward and expressed interest in relocating the Sacramento Monarchs.
The Monarchs, one of the WNBA's original eight franchises, folded last month.
Orender says the league decided that it would not be able to complete a transaction in time for a team to start in a new market next year. The focus then turned to adding a team in 2011.
The WNBA will play the 2010 season with 12 teams.
A dispersal draft involving Monarchs players is scheduled for Monday.
