Timberwolves vs Nuggets Picks & Prediction

For those that haven’t heard, Anthony Edwards has officially arrived, and he’s a monster…

The defending champs didn’t bring their best stuff In Game 1, and Minnesota’s young superstar took full advantage of it. Denver’s two best players, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, combined for just 15 points on 5-of-19 (26.3%) from the field and 1-of-7 (14.3%) from 3-point range in the first half of Saturday’s series opener.

Jokic and Murray heated up quickly after the break, as the Nuggets’ superstar duo combined for 34 points on 12-of-20 (60%) from the floor and 3-of-6 (50%) from 3-point territory in the second half of Saturday’s contest. However, it wasn’t quite enough to derail the Minnesota freight train, as the T-Wolves shot 52% from the field and 41% from 3-point range for the entire game, with Edwards scoring 43 of those points on 17-of-29 (58.6%) shooting, en route to a 7-point victory for the road underdogs in Game 1.

Edwards carried the bulk of the scoring load for Minnesota on Saturday night, with 41% of the Wolves’ 106 points. However, at the risk of sounding cliche, he certainly couldn’t have done it without the help of his supporting cast. Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in 20 points on 62% from the field, Naz Reid and Mike Conley combined for 30 points on 12-of-19 (63%) shooting – and quite frankly, that was barely enough to take down the defending champs on an off-night, as the Nuggets either led or trailed by less than three points for most of the fourth quarter in a back-and-forth battle before losing their grip at the end.

The Nuggets and Timberwolves met in the 1 vs. 8 matchup in the first round of last year’s playoffs, and Denver won the series in five games (4-1), as Denver jumped out to a 3-0 series lead, with all three of those victories coming by margins of 9+ points (+47), before coasting to the finish line. However, as soon as everybody wrote off the T-Wolves and finished beating up on them for how they began the series, they showed a tremendous amount of fight in the final two games, as Minnesota managed to escape with an overtime victory in Game 4, and then lost a heartbreaker on the road by a score of 112-109 in Game 5.

This year’s Minnesota team is much deeper, and much more efficient though – and their overall improvement as a team was on full display in Saturday’s series opener. But push comes to shove, I still believe the Nuggets have a considerable edge in this series at home, and the oddsmakers seem to think a bounce-back effort is in store after shifting the spread one point in favor of Denver, relative to Game 1. I’ll lay the points with Denver in Game 2.

Pick: Nuggets -5.5 (-110)
