How to Read NBA Las Vegas Odds
Now that legal online sports betting is available in several states, including NC where you can check out the best North Carolina sportsbooks, you will need a primer to make the most informed bets possible.
We've broken down how to read NBA odds as they'd be displayed at a real live Las Vegas sportsbook right here.
When you're ready to bet on your favorite NBA team, try some of the best NBA betting sites and use the BetMGM bonus code, bet365 bonus code, Fanatics Sportsbook promo, or FanDuel promo code!
What are Some of the Most Popular NBA Betting Types?
NBA Spreads
The point spread was developed to balance both teams involved in a contest and attract bettors who could potentially back the weaker team and receive points. The two squads in a game are listed with a title, either a favorite or an underdog. The favorite is usually the perceived better team in the game, as backing them means giving up several points.
The favorite is always listed with a minus (-) sign before the point-spread, while the underdog is labeled with a plus (+) label.
NBA Over/Under
Another number posted on the NBA Las Vegas is the total or ‘over/under’ for the specific matchup. That is a bet type on the total number of points both teams will score, and, as the name implies, you choose over or under the specified number.
NBA Moneylines
Lastly, our odds page lists the moneyline, which is a straightforward bet on who will win the game outright, with no point spread factored in.
All the numbers are listed above the teams for you to toggle through, and a Rotation number is just above each matchup. The NBA Las Vegas Odds are listed in order of rotation (and date) and those numbers are generated and produced by the sportsbooks.
Above each matchup and rotation is the Time of the game, which is subject to change. All game times are Eastern Standard Time.

Other NBA Bet Types
Of course, there are other ways to get in on the action:
- NBA Live Betting: Live betting is a great way to get more value on a game since odds and lines update in real-time. Has a heavy favorite fallen behind early, and you still think they will win? If you live bet on that favorite, the odds will likely be a bit better than they were before tip.
- NBA Player Props: With NBA player props, you can bet on various stats, such as points scored, rebounds grabbed, threes made, threes attempted, and more.
- NBA Futures: Who doesn't love a good futures bet on an underdog? With NBA futures bets, you can get good value on a team to win their division, conference, the new NBA Cup, or the NBA Finals.
NBA Events to Bet On
The NBA is never short of drama.
There are a number of events on the league calendar that fans and bettors love to wager on.
Let's take a look at some below:
- Season Openers: All the offseason hype culminates in season openers, where everyone is done with preseason and ready for the real thing.
- NBA In-Season Tournament (NBA Cup): The NBA In-Season Tournament, a new part of the league calendar, was created to attract more interest in the early parts of the season. As such, the tourney makes what would be a regular November game much more fun to bet on.
- NBA Playoffs: This one is self-explanatory. The NBA Playoffs consist of multiple seven-round series, and the betting opportunities are endless, from series winners to conference winners to how many games a series will go and much more.
- NBA Finals: In June, all eyes will be on the NBA Finals, which provide a lot of great betting chances.
VegasInsider Open & Consensus
The VegasInsider Open and Consensus Lines are great features on our NBA Las Vegas Odds page.
NBA Open Line
One of the best features on the NBA Vegas Odds is the Open Line. This number comprises the first betting line received from one of our Las Vegas or Global Sportsbooks. The opening line varies depending on the sportsbook, but it provides a clear-cut rating that the oddsmakers use. If you’re betting on the NBA or any other sport, viewing the open line first is a great idea.
VI Consensus NBA Line
The VegasInsider.com Consensus NBA Line is just as important as the Open Line and also a key resource on the odds platform. The Consensus column could be called a “Median Line” since it shows the most consistent number provided by the sportsbooks on VegasInsider.com. The consensus line will be the same as the open line, but once the wagers start coming in, this number is often different from the openers.
