Arizona took some time to find a suitable sports betting bill to pass through the legislature, but now, after much deliberation, sports betting is legal in the state. April 2021 saw the passage of HB 2772, which legalizes not only online sports betting but expands the scope of gambling at large in the state.

Arizona floated an AZ sports betting bill in 2019, but it fizzled out without any decisions being made. Attempts to get sports betting legalized have come and gone in the legislature, but one bill was finally able to stand the test of scrutiny and make it to the governor's desk.

Now, in 2021, Arizona lawmakers have finally agreed on a sports betting framework, and the AZ Department of Gaming has approved several licenses. The rules have been finalized, and betting is live as of September 9th, 2021, just in time for NFL season.

Below are the confirmed welcome offers in Arizona. All of these offers are live and up for grabs in AZ!

More than 20 US states already offer legal betting with DraftKings Sportsbook. With a strong background in daily fantasy sports and event wagering, DraftKings is on deck to provide its solid services in AZ. Residents and eligible visitors can look forward to DraftKings sportsbook now that AZ sports betting is legal. This operator has already partnered with PGA's TPC Scottsdale to offer betting.

BetMGM

Arizona BetMGM

MGM Resorts International is a prominent presence in the US. In 2018, it launched the first BetMGM Sportsbook in the US, and has a partnership with the Cardinals and Gila River Hotels & Casinos to offer sports betting in AZ. They've now gone live right alongside other big names, just in time for NFL season.

Penn National's partnership with NASCAR means that bettors in AZ can now use this well-rounded platform now that betting has gone live. You can bet both in-person at the Barstool Sportsbook at the Phoenix Raceway and online using the Barstool app.

FOX Bet

Arizona FOX Bet

FOX Bet is one of the newer sportsbooks in the US. Originally called BetStars, it took the name FOX Bet in 2019 after The Stars Group collaborated with media company Fox to enhance legal sports betting in America. The FOX Bet sportsbook is currently available in a handful of states, and they are already offering a solid platform on the AZ sports betting landscape.

WynnBet

Arizona WynnBET

In a partnership with the San Carlos Apache Tribe of AZ, WynnBET has gone live in Arizona. Originally Wynn Sports, this Nevada-born app is offering solid service in many states, and offers Android, iOS, and desktop betting in AZ.

PointsBet

Pointsbet DraftKings

PointsBet was set to launch with a partnership with the Yavapai-Apache Nation's casino, the Cliff Castle Casino Hotel. Due to the fate of the hearing that took place on Labor Day, PointsBet missed out on a gaming license in Arizona.

Mistakenly, Pointsbet were denied a license, despite allegedly receiving a license from the ADG initially. The ADG states that “On Monday, August 23, 2021, an administrative error led to the false issuance of a Tribal Event Wagering Operator License to Cliff Castle Casino Hotel entirely outside of the license allocation process used to distribute the available licenses."

Expect PointsBet to dispute the denial, and try to make its way to a launch in Arizona.

Bally Bet

Bally Bet has announced that they will partner with the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury to offer sports betting in the Grand Canyon state. Bally has a solid platform with a well-established reputation in the betting industry, so we're eager to see what they come up with once they go live.

Daily Fantasy Sports In Arizona

Many states consider daily fantasy sports legal as they fall into a no man’s land in terms of betting regulations. Arizona had laws barring DFS until 2021, when DFS became legal underneath a sweeping gambling legislation signed by Governor Doug Ducey.

Now, sports betting and DFS are legal in the Grand Canyon State. Users will be able to get online with a number of well-known DFS providers. FanDuel and DraftKings have now launched their DFS platform in addition to their sportsbooks, and we hope to see new favorite Monkey Knife Fight.

Arizona Betting RegulationsArizona Betting Laws & Timeline

Arizona residents had waited patiently for their state to catch up with others that had already legalized sports betting: now the wait is over. The Arizona Department of Gaming has finalized their ruleset, and will go live with legal bets at the outset of the 2021 NFL season. Operators will accept users for pre-registration in August and start to offer legal betting in September.

History of Legal Gambling in AZ

Arizona had a sordid history with legal gambling until recently. The AZ Lottery has existed since 1980, and for a while that was the only form of legal gambling in the state other than HHR terminals (historic horse racing). 1992 saw Arizona attempt some legal changes with regard to tribal authority over legal betting, which caused controversy, as many tribal casinos were seen as offering illegal gambling as a result.

Along comes HB 2772, which passed both arms of the Arizona legislature in April 2021. After many bills came and went, HB 2772 was the one that was able to secure support on both sides of the aisle and the governor, Doug Ducey. HB 2772 is a sweeping gambling legislation package that addresses the desires and concerns of numerous parties, such as the ones above like tribal casino operators and interested citizens looking to place legal bets.

Rules have been finalized, and licenses are going out with approval from the Arizona Department of Gaming with a mobile tax rate of 10% of revenue. The 10% mobile tax rate is among the lowest in the country, so it's going to be a competitive market as operators vie for one of the 20 online sports betting licenses available in the state.
