Your bankroll will get a midweek boost this season thanks to the Thursday Night Football breakdown you’ll get from VegasInsider. Every week, for all TNF Matchups, your best bet for NFL handicapping will be right here.
It all starts on opening night when the favorite to win this year’s Super Bowl, the Buffalo Bills, travel to Los Angeles as the Rams kick off the defense of their championship. A couple others on the schedule worth waiting for are the Ravens visiting Tom Brady and his Bucs and the Thanksgiving evening matchup when the Vikings host the Patriots.
In Week 3 of the 2020-21 season, these two teams met in Buffalo. The final score was 35-32, with the Bills blowing a 28-3 lead and needing a Josh Allen TD pass with 15 seconds left on the game clock to grab the win.
Opening night for the new NFL season has this game’s line a pick ‘em contest, with the total pegged at 52. That’s one of the highest combined points totals of Week 1. It looks like Vegas is expecting the offenses to be ready from the start this season, as four Week 1 games have totals above 50.
Bills vs Rams Game Matchup
Buffalo’s season ended with an incredible finish in their loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round. They won the AFC East with an 11-6 record (9-6-2 ATS). Los Angeles, meanwhile, is coming off of their second Super Bowl championship after taking the NFC West with a 12-5 record (8-9 ATS). Last year, both the Rams and the Bills went 4-1 against teams from the other conference.
The Rams open the new season with back-to-back home games and play five of their first seven at SoFi Stadium, where they went 5-3 last year. The Bills begin their quest for that first Super Bowl win with three of their first four on the road, where they also finished 5-3 last season.

Thursday Night Football has been an up and down adventure ride since its debut in 2006. Its novelty wore off quickly as the schedule bounced around between broadcast outlets. There were a solid few years where the matchups always seemed to be ugly football. Sometimes, the teams looked good at the beginning of the year, but by the time that TNF matchup was scheduled, both teams were horrible.
This season it looks like Jeff Bezos will be getting even richer. Amazon has the exclusive rights to the entire TNF product starting this season (outside of Weeks 1 and 12, which are on NBC). When you look at this year’s Thursday schedule, the quality looks fine. There are quite a few divisional matchups with teams that seem to be solid playoff contenders.
Other Ways to Bet on Thursday Night Football
Every new football season brings more exciting ways to wager on the games. The sportsbooks are always adding new options. Seasoned veterans remember the days when you had four choices when wagering on the NFL. There was a favorite, an underdog, and two options for the total.
Some of the best NFL handicappers in the world never even bet on the whole game. They’ll break down the contest using the world of data, statistics, and analytics to find better opportunities for their investments. First quarter action and betting the second half and third quarter team totals allows players to focus on a microcosm of the game and wager only on that.
This year you can start before the regular season even begins with future bets. Think the Rams will repeat? They’re +1000! Do you have the Bengals returning to the Big Game? You can get +900 on them to win the AFC. Is it possible Aaron Rodgers, at his age, can win back-to-back league MVPs? The Packers QB is +1200.
NFL Props have only been around for a few years, but it allows sports bettors to use their fantasy knowledge to win bets on a personnel level. Will the QB throw for more than 2.5 TDs? Is your top fantasy wide receiver going to have more than 84.5 yards in receptions?
When you wager on just one player’s numbers, it totally changes the way you watch the game. If your only play on the contest is total rushing yards for the home team, you can hit the kitchen, the can, or both when the visitors are in possession of the ball.
Thursday Night Football Betting Tips
How many times have you seen someone lose their weekly contest because they never entered their info for Thursday Night Football? Whether it’s their fantasy lineup, an ATS contest, or just a pick ‘em pool, sometimes life gets in the way of sports betting. Always get your plays locked and loaded early to begin the week.
Going blank on Thursday, the start of that week’s journey towards profitability, because you were expected to actually work on your job can keep you aggravated for the entire weekend. Especially when Sunday night comes around, and you’re tied for the lead or only trailing the leader by a little.
Another aspect of TNF, as it is with most of the primetime games, is forcing your play. Just because there’s a game on doesn’t mean you have to bet it. Most books have enough live-action options that you can hop on even well after the game starts.
We’ve all seen a tale of two halves. These are games where each half has a completely different outcome. Maybe it’s 6-3 at the break, and both teams combine for 31 points in the second half, or a team down double digits at half ends up winning the game by that much. Betting only the first or second half is a great way to minimize your investment and risk, in any Thursday Night Football game.
Thursday Night Football FAQ
When does Thursday Night Football start?
How can I watch Thursday Night Football?
If you had $100,000,000,000 lying around, you could’ve been watching the NFL on Thursdays anywhere you wanted for the next 11 years. Jeff Bezos did, so unless it’s a team in your local market, it looks like you’ll need an Amazon Prime subscription to watch TNF going forward outside of Weeks 1 and 12.
What is the highest scoring Thursday Night Football game of all time?
If you like betting overs, there have been some great TNF matchups in the past. The record is still held by the 2017 Week 3 contest when the Rams topped the 49ers 41-39, and the teams combined for at least 16 points in every quarter.
Who are the favorites to win the NFL?
Buffalo (+600), Tampa Bay (+700), and the Chiefs (+900) are the favorites to win this year’s NFL title.
