🗞 WHY CAN'T I BET ON SPORTS IN MAINE?

Sadly, sports betting in Maine is not legal. Although it is projected to launch in 2023! Yes- lawmakers were able to amend and agree upon bill LD 585, giving the authority for offering mobile sports betting to tribes in the state. It's not exactly what the tribes were hoping for: tribal entities in Maine are treated like municipalities and do not have the same sovereignty rights that they do in other states.

The bill the tribes were hoping for would have included amendments to the Maine Indian Land Claims Settlement Act of 1980, which would have given the tribes more internal authority to govern and dictate what happens on tribal land. Said sovereignty bill isn't dead in the water and could be revived later, but for now, the tribes will at least have exclusive rights to offering betting sites to eligible residents and visitors.
