What are the MLB Consensus Picks?

The MLB Consensus Picks are a detailed report that provides a breakdown of selections for each matchup based on the three most popular pre-game betting markets for MLB bettors: Moneyline, Total (Over-Under) and Run Line. For each of these betting markets, the MLB Consensus shows a percentage breakdown and the total number of selections made on each matchup. These numbers are a great handicapping tool as bettors can see a quick snapshot in which way bettors are leaning on a moneyline, total or run line wager.

Our MLB Matchups offer a more comprehensive betting trends percentage breakdown from the action that operators are receiving on specific games. Knowing the betting public plays through these operators, the majority of the leans usually trend toward favorites with moneyline wagers and the over in total bets.

For the MLB Consensus Picks at VegasInsider, the data is showing all available selections made by our MLB expert handicappers. Unlike the majority of bettors, our MLB expert handicappers have a great pulse on the diamond and rest assured, we also track and show that experience with our leaderboards and documented records

Understanding the MLB Consensus Picks

The VegasInsider MLB Consensus Picks provide betting percentages on three different markets and the point-spread is the most popular. In the below example of the MLB matchup between Seattle and Houston, there are a total of seven selections posted on the three markets from our MLB experts.

Moneyline: 7
Total: 1
Run Line: 1

The moneyline betting market had seven handicapper picks and all two were on the Mariners and five were on the Astros, therefore 71% of the consensus was on Houston for this matchup. The total or over-under market also had one pick on the ‘over’ or high side. The Run Line only had 1 handicapper pick posted and it was on Seattle, which was a 1-0 lean or 100% on the Mariners +1.5 on the run line wager.

MLB Consensus Picks Record

What differentiates the MLB Consensus Picks at VegasInsider is our presentation of the records based on previous day trends. Users can toggle between previous days or weeks and check out how profitable the MLB Consensus Picks fared. The overall Consensus Picks Record grades each matchup and betting market that had selections posted. The three grades are Win, Loss and Push. We identify a Push as a tie and in the case of our MLB Consensus Picks, that would be identified as a 50-50% split.

In the above example, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 5-3 and there were ten handicapper picks on this matchup. The Moneyline was a Loss since the Padres lost the game, while the Total was a Win with the ‘over’ cashing and the Run Line was a Win since the Dodgers (-1.5) won by two runs.

Fading or Following the MLB Consensus Picks

The MLB Consensus Picks are a great handicapping tool for bettors with different styles. Some users like to go against the grain and play the opposite of the betting public and those individuals are often referred to as ‘contrarian’ bettors. The bettors that often side with the higher percentages in each matchup would be defined as ‘chalky’ players. Some might scoff at that term knowing that the favorites do cash more often than not on the MLB diamond.

Our advice is to take a look at our MLB Consensus Picks and then compare them to the data in the MLB Matchups index. If you tend to see a large following of VegasInsider experts on an underdog or under wager and the betting public on the opposite sides, then it’s probably a great idea to back our group instead of the general consensus.

MLB Consensus Picks Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MLB consensus?

The MLB consensus tells you what percentage of the betting public are taking on a side of a given bet. This is a great way to see where the public is betting, and if you want to "fade" the public by going with the less-popular choice.

Should I follow the MLB Consensus to the letter?

You should not always follow consensus picks. They typically fall to whatever side a bettor is familiar with and could end up being skewed due to that. It's always a good thing to know what side the public is betting, but important as well is doing your own research and picking a side based on that.

What is a consensus pick?

A consensus pick is a betting pick that goes with the public opinion.

Can MLB consensus picks be trusted?

It is always much smarter to trust an industry consensus pick page over an unlicensed page that could be skewed in a certain way. Our consensus page allows you to check odds from a variety of sources.
