What are MLB Strikeout Prop Bets?

MLB strikeout prop bets are simple and work similarly to standard wagers. If you have ever bet on a player prop in another sport, you already have a baseline understanding of MLB strikeout props. Essentially, each pitcher will have a designated total assigned that can be viewed as the expected number of strikeouts they will accrue during their start.

For example, say Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto draws a line at 6.5 strikeouts. If you bet on the "Over," you are betting Yamamoto to record seven or more strikeouts. If you bet on the "Under", you are betting on Yamamoto to rack up six strikeouts or fewer.

Additionally, there is a betting strategy associated with Major League Baseball strikeout prop bets called "escalators" or "ladders." This strategy bets a standard unit on the normal line for the pitcher and scales downward in size at higher strikeout numbers. Using the example above, this would mean betting on Yamamoto to record 6.5, 7.5, and 8.5 strikeouts. This is a solid way to expand upon your winnings if the pitcher in question excels past their standard line.

How to Read MLB Strikeout Odds

The odds associated with MLB strikeout props are simple to understand. However, as with any bet type, there is some nuance involved and information to gather to help you make informed decisions for your bets.

Let's look at another example of betting. Suppose that Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider is making a start against the Chicago Cubs. Strider's strikeout line is set at 7.5.

Say that as a team, the Cubs strike out at one of the highest clips in MLB. While this information is already baked into the line, you can still use underlying metrics and other data points to understand better any potential value that exists on Strider. This includes recent performance, swinging strike rate, and average innings per start.

While sportsbooks have tons of information at their disposal, having a conviction one way or another on an MLB strikeout prop market can still be profitable when informed.

Now, let's discuss how payouts work on MLB strikeout props. I bet Strider will cover over 7.5 strikeouts against the Cubs at -110 odds. Unlike some other forms of prop bets, most strikeout props will have -110 odds attached in either direction. If I were to bet $10 on Strider, a win would return $9.09 in profit, and my $10 stake would be credited back to my account.

To take it a step further, I can also bet on Strider over 8.5 strikeouts at +150 odds, over 9.5 strikeouts at +300 odds, and 10.5 strikeouts at +750 odds. By using the "laddering" strategy, I can expand upon my wins if I believe Strider can have a far above-expected start in terms of strikeouts.
