Betting on the Boston Red Sox
As one of baseball’s biggest brands, the Red Sox always bring fans to the stands and bettors to the window.
Boston Red Sox Franchise History
The Sox joined Major League Baseball in 1901 and won a handful of championships in their first two decades.
Boston claimed its first title in 1903 thanks to perhaps the game’s most famous pitcher, Cy Young. Young’s remarkable career is immortalized through the award given out to the best pitcher in each League after every season.
Fast forward a little over a decade and Boston has claimed two more titles when two-way superstar Babe Ruth shows up and carries the Sox to another couple Series victories.
After the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920, the franchise endured an 85-year title drought, the third longest in the history of the league.
On the bright side, the flood gates flew open when the Red Sox finally broke through in 2004.
First, Boston’s road to the championship was on life support before the team came back from down 0-3 against the Yankees, the team who swiped Babe Ruth away right after their last championship.
In 2007, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez led the Sox to another World Series title. Ortiz stuck around for the 2013 title as well, before retiring prior to Boston’s fourth title in the post-Ruth era.
Betting on the Boston Red Sox in Massachusetts
Sports betting is not currently legal in Massachusetts. Despite serving as the home-state to sports betting titan DraftKings, the Bay State hasn’t prioritized the growing recreation like other states have.

It’s possible that Massachusetts makes a move to legalize sports betting in 2022, but it’s difficult to express full-blown optimism. There is a lack of cohesion and urgency among state legislature, even after Governor Charlie Baker stated his willingness to sign a sports betting bill.
Baker, who is not running for re-election, said he would happily sign that bill before leaving office if it ever came across his desk.
Senator Eric Lesser, a candidate for lieutenant governor in 2022, has made it clear that he would prioritize sports betting legalization if elected.
Boston fans likely won’t be able to wager on the Sox during the 2022 season, but legalization can pick up steam and move quickly, so check out the example below to get prepared for legal sports betting:
- Red Sox -110
- Yankees -110
In this hypothetical showdown between Major League Baseball’s most iconic franchises, each team’s moneyline is listed at -110.
A bettor placing a wager on the Red Sox simply needs the team to win the game. A -110 line indicates that the bettor would need to place $110 on the Red Sox’s moneyline to net $100 in profit.
