Betting on the Baltimore Orioles
Although success has been hard to come by for the Orioles in recent memory, Camden Yards remains on many Major League Baseball fans’ bucket lists.
That, and Maryland’s momentum with mobile sports betting, could make the Orioles a popular bet in the near future.
Baltimore Orioles Franchise History
The Orioles’ franchise served as one of the American League’s eight charter teams in 1901, but it started out as the Milwaukee Brewers. Just one year later, the team moved to St. Louis and was renamed the St. Louis Browns.
It wasn’t until over 40 years after the American League’s inception that the Browns represented it in the World Series, where they were defeated in six games by its St. Louis counterpart, the Cardinals.
After another lengthy playoff drought, only 22 seasons compared to 43, the now-Baltimore-Orioles returned to the World Series. This time, they emerged victorious after sweeping the Dodgers.
Then, in the ‘70s, the Orioles appeared in the World Series four times and won once thanks to Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and MVP Boog Powell.
Legends Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray led the team to its third championship in 1983. Since that title, Baltimore has struggled to find equal footing and establish itself as a consistent threat.
Betting on the Baltimore Orioles in Maryland
In 2020, Maryland voters approved a ballot measure that legalized sports betting. Following the Marylanders’ decision, the state legislature passed a bill that was signed into law by Governor Larry Hogan in 2021.
While a few retail sportsbooks popped up in the state in late 2021, mobile sports betting hasn’t been as quick to launch. The regulatory process in Maryland has proven to move at a snail’s pace compared to many other US states.
Analysts and experts connected to the Maryland regulatory process estimate that mobile sports betting could be available as early as the fall of 2022. States are moving as quickly as possible to go live in the ever-competitive betting market.
Luckily for prospective bettors, the Free State’s sports betting bill has allowed for 100 licenses, 60 of which are earmarked for online betting. When the state does eventually launch online betting, it should be diverse and robust.

For Orioles fans heading to the beautiful Camden Yards, betting on the game likely won’t be an option for the 2022 season. However, it will be a reality sooner rather than later.
Check out this hypothetical “Battle of the Beltways” game to see what betting on the Orioles might look like:
- Baltimore Orioles +1.5
- Washington Nationals -1.5
Here, Orioles bettors need the team to beat the Nationals or lose by only 1 run. If the Nationals win by more than 1 run, Orioles bettors will suffer a loss.
