NFL Preview – New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys
It is just the second week of the NFL season but there is no question that the matchup on Sunday night on NBC is a big one, as the New York Giants visit the Dallas Cowboys. Both teams lost their openers, so one of these teams is going to be 0-2 after this one is over. And you don’t want to be 0-2, because history is against you. Since 2007 there have been 91 teams that started 0-2 and only 10 of those teams climbed out of that hole and made the playoffs. Let’s look at this Week 2 matchup and NFL picks.

Giants vs. Cowboys TV Coverage: NBC
The Giants are coming off a tough loss last week, as they were beaten at home 20-15 by the Jaguars, while the Cowboys fell to the Panthers 16-8. The Giants started poorly last season, as they went 0-5, so avoiding an 0-2 start is extremely important. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said to the media that he believes this year’s team is different and that they could have beaten the Jaguars.
“There was just a lot of moments and opportunities [against Jacksonville] where we had chances and we didn’t connect. Whether it was the first game or whatever it is, we just missed those chances, but they are right there,” Beckham said. “Our plan is for them to be there all year, so instead of seven points it could have been three extra touchdowns. There’s twenty-eight, it’s just a matter of time before everything starts clicking. We came out and put our best foot forward and it’s a good place to start.”
The Giants have an intense hatred for the Cowboys and head coach Pat Shurmur knows how important winning against Dallas is. His players also know what is at stake. Linebacker B.J. Goodson said to the media that the hatred of the Cowboys hasn’t lessened. “No. It’s a tradition here. So, no. Exclamation point.”
Matchup to Watch
This game comes down to Ezekiel Elliott against the New York run defense. The Cowboys simply don’t have a passing attack to challenge the Giants, so if Elliott doesn’t have a big game the Cowboys are probably not going to win. The Cowboys scored just eight points last week and had just 232 total yards of offense. This year’s Dallas offensive line is simply not as good as it was a year ago. The Cowboys have to find a way to get Elliott involved in the passing game with short passes. The problem is that Jason Garrett has shown no ability to adjust his offense based on what is happening.
The Giants are 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings against the Cowboys. The Giants are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 vs. NFC. The Giants are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in September. The Giants are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games in Week The Cowboys are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. the NFC East. The Cowboys are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in Week 2. The Cowboys are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games.
Looking at the total, the Under is 7-1 in the Giants last 8 games overall. The Under is 4-1 in the Giants last 5 road games. The Under is 5-0 in the Cowboys last 5 games overall. The Under is 4-1 in the Cowboys last 5 home games. The Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
Giants vs. Cowboys Picks
I am really surprised at the line on this game, as I don’t think the Cowboys are any good. I think the number should be closer to a pick, but I know the oddsmakers are going to favor Dallas because they are at home and because they are a public team. I think the Giants win this game outright, so I will take New York plus the points and taking the Giants on the money line is also worth considering.
