Parlay Leg 1 - Astros vs Rockies
Houston finally got a much-needed big win yesterday. This team is way behind the 8-ball and has to take advantage of all their opportunities like this.
Houston was good last season and had solid expectations this season but is just 8-19 on the season. Teams that won at least 55% of their games last season and have won less than 33% of their games this season are +13.0% playing on.
Yet they are still strong favorites here. Favorites of more than -170 in day games are +1.8% playing on.
Not that it has been super helpful for them to be a big favorite. Houston is just 3-7 in its last 10 games as a -175+ favorite. Teams that are at least -175 favorites that have lost more than half of their last 10 games as a -175+ favorite are +4.3% playing on.
Now the line comes in a game in Mexico City with a monster total of 16.5. Favorites are 5-0 when the total is over 14.
Houston has taken advantage of games with monster totals including yesterday. The Astros are 6-0 since 2011 in games with a total over 12.
It was a 12-4 win for Houston yesterday. Teams which lost by 8 or 9 runs last game are +3.6% playing against.
Colorado do not do well after allowing a lot of runs. The Rockies are 2-10 since August 22 when they allowed 10+ runs last game.
Colorado led by a pair of runs early in that game. Teams that led by at least 2 runs last game and lost by at least 8 are +2.3% playing against.
The 12 runs were the most Houston has scored this season. In game 15 of the season and beyond, a team that matched or exceed the most runs they scored in a game this season and scored no more than 13 runs are +3.7% playing on.
Houston starters Framber Valdez today who at least provides a different look for Colorado. They have faced 8 straight right-handed starters. Teams that are facing a left-handed starter after facing at least seven straight right handers are +0.5% playing against.
Parlay Leg 2 - Phillies vs Padres
Philadelphia looks for a sweep in San Diego Sunday after winning by a combined score of 14-4 the past two games.
Philadelphia is 10-2 since April 15 to erase a slow start to the season, now 18-10 overall and winners of seven of the past eight meetings against the Padres.
Taijuan Walker is making his first start of 2024 with a spring training shoulder injury, and he has been a productive NL pitcher the past two seasons with a combined record of 27-11 in 60 starts.
Micheal King had a near no-hitter two starts ago but also has allowed six or more runs twice in April as he has been erratic in an adjustment to a starting role after mostly being a reliever in his five seasons with the Yankees.
King has a painfully high walk rate this season at 5.3 BB/9 while allowing seven home runs in fewer than 31 innings is a concern against a potent Philadelphia lineup that has scored 6.8 runs per nine in the past 10 games vs. right-handed pitching.
In contrast, San Diego has scored just 3.8 runs per nine in that span vs. right-handers.
While the season numbers suggest the Padres have a clear bullpen edge in this series, recent usage puts Philadelphia in a much better position Sunday, getting back-to-back eight-inning starting efforts the past two days, while getting at least five innings from starters in nine of the past 10 games.
San Diego has had three starting efforts of fewer than four innings in the last lap of the rotation and much of the bullpen success for San Diego has come in games like the past two days, playing from behind in low-pressure situations.
Philadelphia is 24 runs superior to San Diego in net scoring at this point in the season and the Padres are just 6-10 at home this season despite being favored to avoid the sweep today.
