2018 AFC South Division Odds

The AFC South Division in 2018 is all about quarterbacks returning from injury, as Deshaun Watson returns from an ACL tear for the Houston Texans, while Andrew Luck returns from a shoulder injury for the Indianapolis Colts.

The Texans are the top choice to win the AFC South this season at odds of +155, while the Jacksonville Jaguars are the second choice at odds of +170. The Tennessee Titans are +300, while the Colts are the longshot at odds of +600. Let’s look at each of these teams heading into the 2018 NFL season.

Odd to Win 2018 AFC East  - per BetDSI
Houston Texans +155
Jacksonville Jaguars +170
Tennessee Titans +300
Indianapolis Colts +600

Houston Texans +155

The Texans were an exciting team for seven games last season with Watson throwing 19 TDs against eight interceptions. After he tore his ACL, the team completely tanked, as they went 1-8 the rest of the season. The Texans also lost their top defensive player J.J. Watt, so without Watson and Watt there was no real hope for Houston. Both players are expected to be back at full strength this season. Watson will have some nice talent surrounding him on offense, with DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller at receiver and Lamar Miller and D’Onta Foreman in the backfield.

The defense for Houston should be vastly improved with a healthy Watt and with the addition of Tyrann Mathieu from Arizona. Houston also added Aaron Colvin from Jacksonville and they get Whitney Mercilus back from injury. There is a lot to like about the Texans heading into the 2018 season.

Jacksonville Jaguars +170

The Jaguars made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game and nearly made the Super Bowl before losing late to the New England Patriots. The Jaguars still have Blake Bortles at quarterback, but he was better in 2017. It helped that he was able to hand the ball off to Leonard Fournette who ran for over 1,000 yards even though he missed three games.

The Jaguars lost Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson to free agency but they do get Marqise Lee back from injury and the added tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins. The Jaguars have a dominating defense that was 2nd overall in the NFL last season and they should be good again this season.

Tennessee Titans +300

The Titans went 9-7 last season and snuck into the playoffs, but Tennessee is just an average team at best. They have an offense that is very inconsistent under quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Titans relied heavily on their running game that ranked No. 1 in the NFL last season. They need Derrick Henry to stay healthy this season because his running mate, DeMarco Murray is gone.

The Titans did pick up Dion Lewis from the Patriots and they are hoping that he can team up with Henry to give them a powerful duo. Tennessee’s defense struggled last season against the pass, but they added Malcolm Butler from New England.

Indianapolis Colts +600

The Colts are hoping that Andrew Luck will finally return from injury. He was supposed to be back last season but he never ended up returning. Jacoby Brissett actually played pretty well in place of Luck, but he didn’t get much help. Indianapolis has T.Y. Hilton and not much else. The Colts are hoping that Luck can make all of their marginal players relevant this season.

On defense the Colts were awful, as they were 29th in the NFL. The Colts have a new head coach in Frank Reich and he expects his defense to be improved this season, but even with Luck returning and the defense being a little better, the Colts figure to struggle.

2018 AFC South Predictions

The AFC South really looks like a two-team race between Houston and Jacksonville. If the Texans can stay healthy, and that is a big if, they have more marquee players than the Jaguars and they should win the division. The Jaguars continue to be an underrated team and they are not a fluke, but it is very difficult for a team like Jacksonville to avoid a fall after having such a successful season.

And despite what Bortles did last season, he is still not a marquee quarterback. The Titans have no value at odds of +300, as they are behind each of the top two teams and the Colts have too many holes on both sides of the ball to turn things around in one season, even if Luck does come back healthy.
