2018 AFC West Division Odds

One of the most competitive divisions in the NFL for 2018 should be the AFC West, with four teams listed at odds of less than +400 to win the division.

The Oakland Raiders have a new head coach in Jon Gruden; the Los Angeles Chargers have the most experienced quarterback in the division in Philip Rivers, while the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos have new starting quarterbacks.

Let’s look at the odds and picks for the AFC West in 2018

Odds to Win AFC West- per BetDSI

Oakland Raiders +190
Los Angeles Chargers +225
Kansas City Chiefs +240
Denver Broncos +380

Oakland Raiders +190

The Raiders are listed as the favorite to win the AFC West, but whether or not they should be is the question. The Raiders have a new head coach in Jon Gruden who appears to be signing every veteran player he can find. Whether that strategy works or not remains to be seen. What we do know is that none of the new additions will matter unless quarterback Derek Carr plays better than he did a year ago. Carr was supposed to be an up and coming star quarterback in the NFL heading into last season but very little went right for him in 2017. He didn’t get much help, as his receivers dropped 35 passes, third-most in the NFL. The Raiders are hoping that Jordy Nelson will be more reliable than Michael Crabtree. Oakland has one of the best defensive players in the league in Khalil Mack, but the Raiders were just 20th overall on defense last season.

Los Angeles Chargers +225

When has Philip Rivers won a big game? There is a lot of love for the Chargers by many people heading into 2018, but they still have Rivers at quarterback and he is 37-years old and despite a very good 2017 season, hard to trust. He was better last year, as he was helped by a very good running game, but he won’t have tight end Hunter Henry this season, as he was lost to injury and Keenan Allen has been injury prone throughout his career. The offense runs through Melvin Gordon and Los Angeles has to hope he stays healthy. The defense for the Chargers was very good last season, particularly against the pass, as they were third in the league in new passing yards per attempt. Only one team threw for more than 300 yards against them.

Kansas City Chiefs +240

The Chiefs are the defending AFC West Champions, but they are the third choice to win the division. Kansas City let Alex Smith and Marcus Peters get away, so they are hoping that Patrick Mahomes is ready for the lead role at quarterback this season and they hope to find someone to replace Peters in the secondary. Mahomes is facing a lot of pressure to perform at a high level this season and if he fails the Chiefs are in serious trouble. Kansas City does have some weapons surrounding Mahomes in Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and they added Sammy Watkins. Kansas City’s defense was just 15th in the NFL last season, so the offense has to carry this team.

Denver Broncos +380

The Broncos have a new starting quarterback this season, as Case Keenum comes over from the Vikings. Keenum is a huge upgrade from what Denver had at quarterback last season and he should give the Broncos a chance to win on a regular basis. The Broncos defense slipped a little bit last season, but with a better offense giving them some rest, and with the addition of Bradley Chubb, Denver should be very good defensively. The Broncos did let Aqib Talib go, but his best days are behind him. Denver will be counting heavily on Bradley Roby and Chris Harris to play well in the secondary this season.

2018 AFC West Predictions

There is very little value in AFC West futures, as the division looks really wide open. The Broncos probably have the best value at odds of +380, as there is not much separating the four teams. Denver has the potential to be vastly improved this season with the addition of Keenum at quarterback. Denver already has a very good defense and they have some pieces on offense surrounding Keenum, especially at wide receiver with Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.

We’ll go with the Broncos to win the AFC West in 2018 at odds of +380.
