Strategy for Poker

When many people begin playing Texas Hold’em, they do so with the aspirations that they’ll be making lots of money by playing online or at the local card room.  After all, it’s all too common to go on the Internet and see the successes of thousands of other players who’ve got it made playing Hold’em for a living.

And Texas can definitely seem like a good way to make some easy cash as the game itself is very simple to learn.  But as the old saying goes about Texas Hold’em, “It takes minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master.”  This statement couldn’t sum up the reality of the situation any better.

So with that in mind, let’s inch a little closer to mastering the game by going over some beginner, intermediate, and advanced tips on Texas Hold’em.

Beginner Tip #1: Concentrate on the two cards in your hand before anything else.

At the beginning of every hand each player is dealt two hole cards and this is what makes every hand at the table unique.  Unfortunately, too many players overlook the cards in their hand and instead think ahead to the flop.  But if the cards in a player’s hand aren’t good enough, then they have no business seeing the flop if it costs chips to do so.  Bad hole cards mean the hand should be folded.

Beginner Tip #2: Realize that everyone is looking at the same Community Cards.

One thing that a lot of rookie poker players make the mistake of doing is honing in on what will make their hand a winner while forgetting everyone else at the table.  Players have to realize that just because they’ve got a high pair doesn’t mean they have the best hand.  If the board shows a good flush possibility and someone is betting like crazy then it’s very possible that they might have the flush.

Intermediate Tip #1: Factor in Table Position at all Times

A lot of people tend to overlook the importance of where they are at on the poker table when making critical decisions.  The three things to keep in mind about table position are that (on a ten person table) the first three spots are early position, the next three are middle position, and the last two are late position (the two blinds have already made some kind of bet).  The later a player is in the hand, the more information they will have on the other players’ hands.  And the dealer position is always the best spot to be in because it is the absolute last to act among those who have yet to wager on the hand.

Intermediate Tip #2: Don’t get caught sticking up for Blinds

Sometimes you’ll see a player who places a blind develop some weird attachment to it which ultimately ends up in this person trying to fight to the end to protect it.  But the key to remember is that everyone at the table has to place these forced bets when it’s their turn and sticking up for blinds is a ridiculous decision to make.  If one doesn’t have a good hand then they should fold it and avoid further pre-flop betting if someone else raises the blinds.

Advanced Tip #1: Always be analyzing the Game.

It’s not easy to hone in on every minute of a poker game as everybody has the tendency to drift off once and a while.  However, one must avoid spats with ADD as much as possible when there’s money on the line.  And that means that players should be gathering as much information about those at the table as they can.  Watching how someone plays to the end of a hand with a mediocre pair or how a certain player likes to semi-bluff quite often could be the difference between a big profit at the table and a negative bankroll at the end of the night.

Advanced Tip #2: Try to Identify the Type of Table you’re at in a Short Amount of Time.

When many Texas Hold’em players get used to the game, they’ll begin noticing how tables take on certain styles.  For instance, some tables may be very tight meaning the players there don’t bet out much unless they have the best hand.  On the other hand, a loose table will see many players betting out and playing to the river with average hands.  A lot of bluffing may be seen at such tables as well.  Many players will eventually catch on to what style the table they’re at features but if one can do this quickly and effectively, they can get a big jump on the other players.
