2018 World Cup Group Odds
December 4, 2017
The 2018 World Cup draw took place on Friday, and the 32 teams who qualified now know who their opponents are going to be for the Group Stage, and what their draws down the line will look like.
Some of these groups are clearly easier than others, but there isn't such a thing as a group some clear divides.
Below are World Cup odds and analysis from BookMaker.eu.
Odds to Win Group A
Saudi Arabia +3300
Egypt is going to be a popular choice to pull off a big upset in Group A. Uruguay had an up-and-down qualifying campaign. It could just as easily be a team that reaches the semifinals of the World Cup as it could fall out after three matches. Russia will have a lot of pressure to perform in this group. It's a favorable draw by the standards of the difficulty of the World Cup, but it's going to take a big showing to get the job done.
Odds to Win Group B
Poor Iran really picked up a really tough draw. In another group, the top Asian qualifier could have been a real threat. As it is, Spain and Portugal are the two favorites in this group by a country mile. That first match in Group B is going to be really interesting between two of Europe's top powers.
Odds to Win Group C
The draw for France to get into the semifinals of the World Cup is about as easy as it gets. Of course, that doesn't mean that's how this is going to happen, but Les Bleus have gotten a dream playing against Denmark, Peru and Australia in the group stage and then likely either Croatia, Nigeria or Iceland in the Round of 16. Even after that, it's likely to get either Uruguay or Portugal in the quarterfinals.
Odds to Win Group D
Iceland is going to be the feel-good team in Group D after its great performance to get into the Euro 2016 quarterfinals. That said, this is a group that Argentina really should win. Lionel Messi and the gang didn't play well in qualifying and darn near went the way of Italy, Argentina, Chile and the United States and didn't get into the field. If Argentina comes to play, this is a dangerous team.
Odds to Win Group E
Costa Rica +1600
Brazil had a great run through CONMEBOL qualifying and was one of the first teams to punch its ticket to Russia. The team gets to play against two middling European qualifiers and a lousy CONCACAF team in the group stage, and then it will likely get Mexico or Sweden in the Round of 16 followed by likely Belgium or England. That's about as easy as it gets and is why Brazil is going to be considered one of the top favorites to win the World Cup.
Odds to Win Group F
South Korea +1000
Group F is largely considered the "Group of Death." Germany, though, is the biggest favorite to win a group amongst the eight foursomes. The Germans are just flat out awesome, and they really shouldn't have problems against Mexico, Sweden or South Korea. Good luck handicapping a second team to get out of this group, though.
Odds to Win Group G
The good news for Belgium and England is that both of these European giants should get into the last 16. The bad news for these two teams is that they are both under a lot of pressure. If either team doesn't advance past Tunisia or Panama, there is going to be a lot of grief when the teams get back home.
Odds to Win Group H
There aren't many groups that all four teams seem to have the ability to win, but this is one of them. Colombia and Poland are both definitively favorites to win this group, but Senegal is one of the top teams in Africa and Japan was a sneaky qualifier out of Asia. Goals could be at a premium in this foursome, and that could make this group incredibly unpredictable.
