Group G Team Previews

1. Belgium

The "Red Devils" have moved past their famed "Golden Generation" and are now a team in transition, blending seasoned veterans with some of the most exciting young attackers in the Premier League and Bundesliga.

  • How They Qualified: Belgium dominated UEFA Group J, finishing as undefeated winners. They secured their spot in November 2025 with a clinical qualifying campaign that silenced doubters after a rocky Euro 2024.
  • Team Overview: Under manager Domenico Tedesco, Belgium has shifted toward a faster, more direct style of play. While the defense is younger and less experienced than in years past, their midfield remains world-class, capable of carving open any defense in the world.
  • Star Players:
    • Kevin De Bruyne: The maestro. Even as he enters the twilight of his career, his vision and crossing ability make him the most dangerous playmaker in the group.
    • Jérémy Doku: A nightmare for full-backs, his explosive dribbling and speed provide the chaos that creates space for Belgium's strikers.

2. Egypt

"The Pharaohs" arrive in North America as one of Africa’s strongest representatives, determined to finally make a deep run in a tournament that has historically eluded them.

  • How They Qualified: Egypt cruised through CAF Group A, winning their qualification group comfortably and sealing their ticket in October 2025.
  • Team Overview: Egypt is a team that balances defensive discipline with a lethal attacking threat. While they are often associated solely with their superstar captain, the current squad features a much stronger supporting cast playing in Europe’s top leagues, making them a much more balanced unit than in 2018.
  • Star Players:
    • Mohamed Salah: One of the greatest African players of all time. His ability to change a game in a single second makes Egypt a threat to even the biggest teams.
    • Omar Marmoush: A breakout star in the Bundesliga, providing a versatile second scoring option that takes the defensive pressure off Salah.

3. Iran

"Team Melli" is the most consistent team in Asian football, entering their fourth consecutive World Cup with a squad that is physically imposing and tactically savvy.

  • How They Qualified: Iran was the dominant force in the AFC Third Round Group A, finishing as group winners ahead of Uzbekistan and securing their spot in March 2025.
  • Team Overview: Iran is known for being incredibly difficult to break down. They typically employ a compact mid-block and rely on the chemistry of their long-standing strike partnership. They have a history of pushing elite teams to the brink (as seen against Argentina in 2014 and Spain in 2018).
  • Star Players:
    • Mehdi Taremi: A prolific goalscorer in European competition, Taremi’s intelligent movement and physical presence make him a handful for any center-back.
    • Sardar Azmoun: The "Iranian Messi" provides the technical flair and aerial threat that complements Taremi’s power perfectly.

4. New Zealand

The "All Whites" are making their third World Cup appearance and their first since 2010. They represent the first-ever team to benefit from Oceania's new guaranteed qualifying spot.

  • How They Qualified: New Zealand swept through the OFC Third Round, defeating New Caledonia in the final in March 2025 to claim the direct qualification berth.
  • Team Overview: New Zealand enters the tournament as the lowest-ranked team in the group, but they are far from pushovers. They play a very physical, organized game and are particularly dangerous on set pieces. With a squad of players primarily based in the A-League and English lower leagues, they rely on a strong collective spirit.
  • Star Players:
    • Chris Wood: The captain and all-time leading scorer. His Premier League experience and aerial dominance are New Zealand’s primary path to goal.
    • Liborato Cacace: A dynamic left-back playing in Serie A who provides the team's primary creative outlet from wide areas.
