UEFA EURO HISTORY
The UEFA European Championship began in 1960, with France hosting the first tournament. It's been held every four years since, except for 2020. That edition was pushed to the summer of 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, though UEFA still refers to it as "Euro 2020."
Spain now holds the record for most Euro titles, with four wins (1964, 2008, 2012, and 2024). Germany sits second with three titles, including a win in 1996 when England hosted. Italy has reached four finals, winning two (1968 and 2020) and losing two (2000 and 2012).
France remains the last nation to both host and win the event, doing so in 1984. Germany hosted in 2024 but fell to Spain in the quarterfinals. Euro 2028 marks the second time the tournament has used a multi-country hosting model, after Euro 2020 spread matches across 11 nations. This time, hosting duties are split four ways between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
