Terry selected as England captain
August 19, 2008
WATFORD, England (AP) -John Terry was chosen England soccer captain for a second time on Tuesday.
Manager Fabio Capello tried out Steven Gerrard, former captain David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand and Terry in the role in recent matches but settled on the Chelsea captain.
Terry's second spell as full-time captain starts Wednesday at Wembley in a friendly against the Czech Republic, which will be his 45th international.
Many observers had expected Ferdinand to take the role after a season in which his increasingly solid and composed performances helped lead Manchester United to the Premier League and Champions League titles.
But the 27-year-old Terry impressed Capello with the way he rebounded from missing the penalty kick that could have won Chelsea the Champions League.
Terry also has the advantage of working regularly at his club with England regulars Joe Cole and Ashley Cole. His confirmation as captain also suggests that he is still a certain pick in central defense alongside Ferdinand.
Terry had led the Blues to back-to-back Premier League titles when he was first chosen England captain by Steve McClaren two years ago.
