UFC 280 Betting Odds Analysis

Two titles will be up for grabs at UFC 280. Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev will square off for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship, and Aljamain Sterling will defend his UFC Bantamweight Championship against T.J. Dillashaw. This might be the most exciting undercard of the year too, as we have a total of seven fights against ranked fighters slated for this promotion.

UFC 280 is slated to take place on Saturday, October 22, 2022, from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The main card will get underway at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN PPV.

UFC 280: OLIVEIRA VS. MAKHACHEV PREDICTION

Charles Oliveira defeated Justin Gaethje at UFC 274, but he lost his UFC Lightweight Championship after failing to make weight by a half-pound before the event. Oliveira was looking to defend the title for the second time after scoring a knockout of Michael Chandler at UFC 262, yet he will now need to win back the belt.

Despite his immense success over the last five years, the oddsmakers continue to doubt Oliveira. He has won 11 straight fights and has set the record for most finishes in the UFC (19) and most submission victories (16). However, Oliveira hasn’t been more than a -130 favorite in any of his last five fights, and he was an underdog in three of those bouts.

Islam Makhachev is 22-1 in his MMA career. His only loss came in his second UFC bout, as he was dropped by Adriano Martins in the first round at UFC 192. Since that defeat, Makhachev has won 10 straight fights, and he has largely been an enormous favorite by the MMA betting odds.

However, while Makhachev has been dominant, he hasn’t taken on top tier opponents. His best win has come against No. 10 ranked lightweight Arman Tsarukyan, so this is a big step up in competition for him.

Prediction: Charles Oliveira by Submission

UFC 280: STERLING VS. DILLASHAW PREDICTION

Aljamain Sterling is one of the most unpopular fighters in the UFC. Sterling became the first fighter in UFC history to claim a title by DQ after telling the referee that he couldn’t continue following an illegal knee from champion Petr Yan in the fourth round of their title fight. Yan was in full control of the match when he committed a bonehead mistake, leading to Sterling being crowned champion.

Sterling was a heavy underdog by the UFC betting lines in the rematch at UFC 273, but he fared much better and managed to win a split decision over Yan. He has now won seven straight bouts, and Sterling is a moderate favorite over T.J. Dillashaw in his second title defense.

Former UFC Bantamweight Champion T.J. Dillashaw has only fought once since January 2019. He was suspended for two years after testing positive for EPO following his title fight with Henry Cejudo, and he was not impressive in his return to the Octagon last summer.

Dillashaw managed to win a split decision over Cory Sandhagen in July 2021. He was a sizeable underdog in the bout, but the judges thought he did enough to get the victory. However, most observers and media outlets believed that Sandhagen should have had his arm raised, leading to some controversy. Dillashaw injured his knee in the bout and hasn’t fought since that point, so there are a lot of questions about his readiness.

Prediction: Aljamain Sterling by Decision

UFC 280: YAN VS. O’MALLEY PREDICTION

Former UFC Bantamweight Championship Petr Yan has been pretty dominant since joining the promotion. The only fighter Yan has lost to is Aljamain Sterling and one of those defeats was due to a DQ and the other loss was by split decision. Yan has earned convincing victories against his other opponents, including Cory Sandhagen and Jose Aldo.

Sugar Sean O’Malley is one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC. O’Malley has earned a bonus in each of his last six victories, and he has knocked out his foe in each of his last five wins. This is by far the toughest test of his career though, and he’s likely to struggle against Yan.
