TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Denzel Bowles had 24 points and seven rebounds, leading James Madison to a 66-61 victory over South Florida on Saturday night.
Junior college transfers Jawanza Poland and Hugh Robertson each had season highs with 19 points for South Florida (6-6). Jarrid Famous added 11, all in the first half, for the Bulls. Robertson grabbed 11 rebounds and Famous had 10.
Bowles, who came in ranked sixth nationally with a 64.6 shooting percentage from the field, was 3 for 9 in the first half. He scored 15 points in the second half and finished 9 for 18 overall, helping James Madison (8-3) overcome a 10-point deficit.
Devon Moore added 14 points and Rayshawn Goins had 11 rebounds for the Dukes.
South Florida hit seven of its first eight shots en route to an 18-4 advantage. James Madison immediately responded with a 17-2 run for the first of six lead changes in the opening half.
The Bulls led 34-30 at the break and rebuilt their lead to 10 in the second half before Bowles sparked the winning rally.
South Florida junior Augustus Gilchrist missed his third consecutive game because of a dispute with coach Stan Heath. The 6-foot-10 forward, who averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds through nine games, apologized to the team and fans Friday and is expected to play Wednesday night at Cleveland State.
