SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Stanford wide receiver and All-American kick returner Ty Montgomery says he is rehabilitating from right shoulder surgery but hopes to play in the season opener against UC Davis on Aug. 30.
Montgomery says he played through the injury part of last season. He also hurt a knee in the Rose Bowl loss to Michigan State.
Montgomery says he's lifting weights, running routes and catching passes. He's also waiting for team doctors to clear him for contact drills.
Montgomery's self-diagnosis at Bay Area College Football Media Day sounded more optimistic than what Cardinal coach David Shaw had announced a week ago. Shaw said at Pac-12 media days in Los Angeles that Montgomery would probably sit out the season opener and is questionable for Stanford's game against Southern California on Sept. 6.
Shaw added Wednesday that team doctors will make the decision on Montgomery's status.
