Handicapping Ole Miss (6)
Check out more College Football Future Odds at!

The Mississippi Rebels will not be going to a bowl game this season, as they are ineligible, but they could still have a winning season. The Rebels have a new head coach in Matt Luke and a good offensive coordinator in Phil Longo. Ole Miss did lose quarterback Shea Patterson, as he transferred to Michigan, but the Rebels have a very good offensive line, a talented group of receivers and the defense is decent. Oddsmakers set the win total for Ole Miss at six for this season.

Let’s look at the Rebels and see if they will go over or under that total.

Mississippi Rebels 2018 Season Win Total - per BetDSI
Over 6 (-130)
Under 6 (+100)

The Rebels have a reasonable schedule, as they get Texas Tech, Southern Illinois, Kent State and ULM out of conference. They should win at least three of those games and possibly all four. The Rebels have to start their SEC schedule by playing Alabama and it doesn’t get much better, as they have road trips to LSU and Arkansas before they face Auburn.

SEC Win Totals

2018 Mississippi Schedule Analysis

Sept. 1 vs. Texas Tech (in Houston)
The Rebels are very capable of beating Texas Tech in the opener and they get a break with the game being in Houston. The Rebels are listed as a 1-point favorite at BetDSI.

Sept. 8 Southern Illinois
The Rebels should have no problem in their home opener, as they can name the score in this one.

Sept. 15 Alabama
The Rebels are going to be double-digit home underdogs and they will do well just to make this game respectable.

Sept. 22 Kent State
The Rebels get another easy game at home, as they take on Kent State. This should be a rout for Ole Miss.

Sept. 29 at LSU
The Rebels will likely struggle in this one, as they almost always have trouble against the Tigers.

Oct. 6 ULM
It seems like the schedule is set up for a win and then a loss all season and this should be another home win.

Oct. 13 at Arkansas
The Rebels are not without a chance in this one, but it is on the road and the Razorbacks are normally tough at home.

Oct. 20 Auburn
The Rebels probably don’t have enough offense to contend with an Auburn team that could be a national title contender.

Oct. 27 Bye

Nov. 3 South Carolina
This is one of the games that will decide whether or not Ole Miss has a winning season. The Gamecocks are a good team and this game could go either way.

Nov. 10 at Texas A&M
The Aggies should have things figured out by this time in the season under Jimbo Fisher, so this one looks like a road loss for Ole Miss.

Nov. 17 at Vanderbilt
The Rebels are definitely capable of winning on the road at Vandy.

Nov. 22 Mississippi State
The Egg Bowl should be another competitive matchup and home field hasn’t always meant much, as the road team has won each of the last three meetings in this series.

2018 Mississippi Rebels Season Win Total

The Rebels won’t be going to a bowl game, but they have some talent and the schedule sets up for them to have a winning season. The Rebels will need their defense to be improved this season if they are to make some noise in the SEC. They were run over by almost every SEC team last season, so a big factor this season will be defensive improvement.

The good news for Ole Miss is that they have a potent offense. They may not miss Patterson at all, as Jordan Ta’amu threw for 1,682 yards with 11 TDs and four interceptions after taking over. He has one of the best receivers in the SEC to throw to in A.J. Brown.

The win total for Ole Miss is set at six and looking at the schedule, the under could be the way to go.

They have three sure wins and four likely losses. That leaves five games that will decide the season. Those games are against Texas Tech, Arkansas, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. The Rebels would have to win four of those five games to get to seven wins and go over the total. A 5-7 season seems more likely than a 7-5 season.
