Coaches and a few select players gathered in Birmingham this week for SEC Media Days, and a number of developing stories came out of the rendezvous. Let's touch on some of those now...

| **Will Schaeffer make it to Oxford?**
Since February, Ole Miss has had former Tennessee quarterback Brent Schaeffer penciled in as its starter. However, Schaeffer hasn't earned enough credits to enroll at Ole Miss yet. The speedy southpaw signal caller is currently at California's College of the Sequoias, attempting to complete the required course work.
The summer semester at College of the Sequoias ends on Aug. 3rd, the same day players are expected to report in Oxford. According to a VegasInsider.com source familiar with the situation, the chances of Schaeffer getting eligible are "50-50."
If Schaeffer can't get eligible, the Rebels -- and second-year head coach Ed Orgeron -- are going to be in serious trouble. The only player on the Ole Miss roster with experience at QB is Robert Lane, who played tight end in the spring.
On the other hand, Schaeffer will give Ole Miss a chance if he earns his eligibility. He's a player with SEC experience (remember, he split time with Erik Ainge at UT two years ago) that can make plays with his legs, giving the Rebels a scrambling dimension they haven't had in years.
**Mustain the man at Arkansas?**
Mitch Mustain is the biggest recruit in Arkansas school history, shunning the big-name schools to stay in his home state. But will Mustain be the starter in Week 1, when the Hogs play host to Southern Cal?
"We've never had a quarterback like Mitch with all of his accolades," head coach Houston Nutt told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "But jumping from Friday night to Saturday night is an awful big step in this league."
Making things easier for Mustain will be the comfort zone provided by the new offensive coordinator, who was Mustain's head coach in high school. In addition, a veteran offensive line returns and the Hogs have a big-time running back (Darren McFadden) and a play-making wideout (Marcus Monk).
Only time will tell if Mustain gets the starting nod against the Trojans, who spanked Arkansas by a 70-17 count last year. Regardless, Mustain will eventually be the starter this year and beyond.
**Odds to win SEC Championship Game**
Our friends at Sportsbook.com have released future odds for who will win the SEC. Auburn has been tabbed as the favorite with 5/2 odds, followed by Florida at 11/4.
LSU is listed with 4/1 odds, while Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia are marked at 7/1. Alabama has 10/1 odds and South Carolina and Ole Miss are 20/1.
**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**
--Arkansas' McFadden had surgery on his toe Saturday (7/29) and is now "doubtful" for the opener vs. USC. McFadden sustained the injury during a bar fight late Friday night. The Hogs do have a quality back-up in Felix Jones, who rushed for 626 yards as a freshman last year.
--Sportsbook.com has released spread for a number of key SEC games in its Game of the Year section. In Week 2, the offshore website has Georgia listed as a one-point favorite at South Carolina. In Week 3, Auburn is a 5 1/2-point home 'chalk' versus LSU, while Florida is a two-point road favorite at Tennessee.
--Sportsbook.com has also released season win totals. Florida has a tally of 9 1/2 but 'under' backers have to risk a minus 170 price, while the 'over' pays out at plus 140. Auburn's total is 10 'under' (-125).
--Something tells me a lot is going to be on the line when LSU plays host to Fresno State on Oct. 21.
--Why is Kentucky delaying the inevitable and giving Rich Brooks another season? Hand the man his pink slip and get on with it.
--Is Butch Davis waiting on the Arkansas job? The job will be his if Arkansas doesn't have a big year, but I think the Hogs are going to be good this season. If they are, Nutt will get a contract extension.
