Week 12

Northwestern had a 456-298 yd edge vs Indiana but needed a TD with :44 left to pull out the win. The Wildcats missed a 31 yd FG, were int'd in the EZ from the 6 yd line and were int'd in the EZ from the 11. IU also got a 91 yd KR for a TD and overcame a 24-14 deficit to lead 28-24 before the winning Cats TD...

We used our 5* Game of the Year on South Florida and expected a dominating win and that is exactly what happened. USF rolled up 582 yds offense and Syracuse gained 60 of their 291 yds on a final garbage drive. USF led 41-10 after 3Q's and even played their 3rd string QB in the 4Q and finished with a 346-15 rushing edge with SU only getting positive rushing yardage thanks to that final garbage drive...

Clemson won six ACC Titles from 1981-'91 but has not won one since. Their win over Wake Forest basically sets up the Div Champ game when they host BC this week. CU rolled up 411 yds and led 27-7 at the half rolling to a 44-10 home win...

It was a tough loss for Colorado. At half they led Iowa St 21-0 with a 255-106 yd edge but going into the wind in the 3Q they went for it on 4th & 1 and were SOD. Iowa St scored on their next 4 drives to stunningly take a 24-21 lead early 4Q. Trailing 31-28, CU nailed a 50 yd FG to tie but they were penalized for snapping the ball before it was blown into play. Eberhart then made a 55 yd FG which the refs negated because that time had run out and Iowa St came away with the home finale win...

played just their 3rd good game of the year. They led Texas Tech just 28-20 at the half but TT had a TD called back and on 4th & 14 a pass fell incomplete. Six of the first 7 poss of the 3Q were TD's. UT also rec'd a squib KO at the TT 32 in the 2Q and rolled to a 59-43 win...

Colorado St RB Gartrell Johnson rushed for 172 yards and they were tied with New Mexico 23-23 when they punted with seconds left. NM's OJ Swift ret'd a punt to the Rams 26 lunging for the final few yards with just :03 left and on the next play NM got a 43 yd FG for the 26-23 win...

Connecticut came in unbeaten in the Big East and ranked #16. Cincinnati was not ranked but was almost a TD favorite and the Bearcats proved why as they had a 420-210 yd edge in their dominating 27-3 win at home...

Utah had a commanding 505-122 yd edge and it was 324-59 at the half. The key play happened early when Wyoming faked a punt and was stopped at its own 28. Utah dominated the rest of the half with a 324-59 yd edge and led 40-0 at the half...

Baylor runs the same offense that Oklahoma's opponent this week (TTech) does. It must be a bit disheartening that BU actually had a 307-284 yd edge at the half vs OU, even though they trailed 28-14. In the 1H BU was int'd on 1st & goal from the 3 and missed a 38 yd FG and OU took over in the 2H in the 31 point win...

Florida Atlantic had a 373-256 yd edge over Arkansas St but ASU got TD drives of 5 and 20 yds after TO's and FAU needed a TD with 2:02 left to pull out the win...

Tennessee was outgained by Arkansas 289-279 but those stats are a bit misleading as UT led 20-3 at the half with commanding 13-1 FD and 171-48 yd edges. The Vols upped it to 27-3 and then Arkansas went on 10 and 14 play drives but only had a FG and were SOD to show for it. UT's final score was a 34 yd IR TD with 2:46 left...

It had been rumored all week that Georgia would wear black jerseys but they came out for warm-ups in red ones. They stripped those off before the game, changing to black and led Auburn 17-3 before trailing 20-17 in the 3Q and scoring the game's final 4 TD's and finished with a 417-216 yd edge...

It was supposed to be a glorious night for Miami, Fl and had you told Hurricane fans the final score of the final game in the Orange Bowl would be 48-0 prior to the game, they would have been elated. Unfortunately, they wouldn't have ever guessed it would be Virginia who finished on top with a 418-189 yd edge. It was just 7-0 late 1Q but the Cavs scored 24 points in the final 16:08 of the half...

The records continue to pile up for Notre Dame, but none are good. The Irish suffered their worst loss to a military academy since a 35-14 loss to Navy in 1963 and for the first time since 1944 lost to 2 military academies in the same season. It was also the first time they lost 9 games in a season and ND also moved to 0-6 at home this year. ND actually had a shot at the cover trailing 34-24 when their QB sneak on 4th & 1 at their own 25 with 4:47 left was stopped and AF added a TD 7 plays later...

A look at the box score would have you thinking rout as Louisiana-Lft had a 528-256 yd edge vs Middle Tennessee in their 10 point win. MT was actually in control in the 1H leading 21-14 and ULL did not get their first lead until a 52 yd TD run with 10:57 left. A personal foul on a 1 yd gain on 3rd & 9 kept alive a ULL drive and on the next play got a 31 yd TD for a 10 point lead (8:27). MT punted and was int'd on their final two drives and ULL took over with 4:25 left and ran 11 plays finishing the game at the 12 yd line...

Three weeks ago, ULM had 2 players top 100 yds rushing. It was the first time since 1994 they had accomplished that. Last week Calvin Dawson rushed for 100 and Frank Goodin for 106 and it was the 3rd time in 3 weeks ULM had 2 backs over 100 yds in the same game. ULM also played great D holding Grambling St to just 45 yds in the 1H...

UCF RB Kevin Smith rushed for 320 yds vs UAB and UCF had a 506-343 yd edge in their 45-31 win...

E Carolina was trying to wrap up the CUSA East Title but Marshall dominated with 239 yards rushing and 238 passing and EC had just 259 total yards...

Kansas moved to 10-0 for the first time since they finished the 1899 season with that record and is now the only unbeaten team left in the six BCS conferences as they had an impressive win over Oklahoma St on the road...

S Carolina fumbled on the game's opening play then had a punt blocked on their next drive setting up UF for 13 quick points. SC battled back to a 14-13 lead but Tim Tebow rushed for 120 and passed for 304 yds in Florida's 20 point win...

Illinois had lost their previous 16 matchups with #1 teams but knocked off Ohio St 28-21. Not since 1959 had Michigan and Ohio St both lost the week before their rivalry game and IL had a 400-336 yd edge...

Michigan's starting QB Chad Henne was ineffective with injury and RB Hart did not play. The game did not really effect UM's chance at a Big Ten Title as that depended on next week's results. Wisconsin jumped out to a 17-0 lead but UM battled back to pull within 23-21 before an int set up a TD and after UM was SOD on a 4th & 20 at its own 2, UW tacked on another TD with 2:15 left...

Vanderbilt trailed Kentucky 27-20 and had a 2nd & 1 at the Wildcat 15 but QB Adams took a sack and was inj'd, spiked the ball and then had a 4th down pass fall incomplete with :11 left...

At the beginning of the year, Sam Keller and Joe Ganz battled for the starting QB job. Keller, the Arizona St transfer, seemed like the obvious winner but for some strange reason, Bill Callahan struggled with the decision. We now see why. Ganz, after guiding Nebraska's offense to 484 yds and 39 pts the previous week, led them to 73 points and 702 yds offense vs a solid Kansas St D. Ganz hit 30-40 for 510 yds in NU's 73-31 romp.

A few weeks back Rice trailed UTEP by 21 pts in the 4Q but got a miracle win. SMU was playing its final home game for Phil Bennett since it was announced he would not return next season and appeared to have the game locked up leading Rice 42-27. Once again Rice made the miracle finish getting a 31 yd FG on the final play capping a 16-0 4Q rally and Rice pulled out the 43-42 win.

Paul Smith set Tulsa's single season and career record in passing yards throwing for 3,496 and in his career now has 9,367. Houston only needed to win to wrap up the Western Div Title but was dominated. UH's previous low in a conf game was 30 points but Tulsa whipped them 56-7 taking advantage of 5 TO's. TU scored 3 TD's in the final 3:24 of the half to blow it open...

USC and Cal was played in a steady downpour but Chauncey Washington rushed for a career high 220 yards in the Trojans 7 point win. If USC wins out, they will be in a BCS bowl...

Eugene Jarvis broke Kent St's single season rushing record as he added 170 yds to his total vs N Illinois...

It's not often that a player becomes a career leader for a team but in the New Mexico St/San Jose St game two players earned those honors. Adam Tafralis set the school record for career total offense (7,363) passing Jeff Garcia and NMSt QB Chase Holbrook set the Aggie school record for career passing yards (7,795). Their game was 13-10 in the 2Q but SJSt scored 3 TD's in the final 7:25 of the half to blow it open...

Ray Rice rushed for a school record 243 yds for Rutgers as they dominated Army on a cold & rainy Friday night delivering another Marquee PPH Winner for us. Army's only TD came on a 65 yd IR TD and RU had 25-6 FD & 404-97 rushing edges and held the ball for 41:56 in their dominating win...

Navy and N Texas had the highest scoring game in IA ball as the final was 74-62. At the half it was an amazing 49-45 in favor of NT. The previous record in IA ball was 133 pts in SJSt's 70-63 win over Rice in regulation. Navy wrapped up a spot in the Poinsettia Bowl.

While it was not an injury, it was a key player that missed most of the game. W Michigan was in control vs C Michigan leading 7-0 and having a 1st & goal at the CM 12. WR Simmons caught a 40 yd pass and the DB would not let go of his foot. He tried to shake it free once and then tried to shake it free again, but this time the foot came in contact with the DB and the ref threw a flag. Not only was WM penalized 15 yds, which would result in a missed FG, but Simmons who came in with 78 rec's and (next closest WM player had just 29) was kicked out of the game. WM's offense struggled the rest of the 1H and actually trailed 7-3. At the end of the game, WM took the lead, 31-27 but CM got a TD on a controversial 3rd & 1 TD in which QB LeFevour's momentum was stopped but the whistle was not blown...

Maryland is the most banged up team in the NCAA and continues to lose a new OL each week. Playing with a make-shift O-line and without their top rusher on the season Keon Lattimore (hamstring), #2 receiver Danny Oquendo and star LB Erin Henderson who is their top tackler, this banged up Terps team still dominated Boston College rolling up 472 yards offense and 5 TD's. MD actually led 42-21 before BC got a couple of late TD's including a garbage TD with :52 left...

Early in the 2Q, Kent St, who earlier this season lost QB Edelman, lost QB Giorgio Morgan. Third string QB Jon Brown took over the rest of the game hitting 16 of 34 for 132 yds but was int'd at the Huskies 10 yd line trailing by 7 in the final minute...

Hawaii's Colt Brennan suffered a concussion late in the Fresno game and did not return but says he will be ready for this week's battle with Nevada...

UNLV's new starting QB Omar Clayton broke a bone in his right hand in the 1Q and did not return. Travis Dixon, who had been the starting QB in place of inj'd Rocky Hinds, hit 13-22 for 185 yards. SDSt led 21-0 at the half in their 38-30 win...

Oregon St was already starting backup QB Lyle Moevao and he hit just 10-22 passes for 109 yards. The key to OSU's win over Washington probably occurred in the 2Q when Jake Locker was flattened and taken off the field on a stretcher but later returned to Reser Stadium with a neck brace on and was on the sidelines at the end of the game. Their backup QB Carl Bonnell hit just 10-25 passes but did throw for 255 yds. UW trailed 29-10 before getting the game's final 2 TD's...

Georgia Tech TB Tashard Choice saw his first action since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery and rushed for 170 yds vs Duke...

Florida St and Virginia Tech both lost their starting QB's to injury. In VT's case, that meant that Tyrod Taylor who had taken over the starting job but got inj'd, played the 2H and hit 10-15 for 204 yards. In FSU's case, they had suspended QB Lee and rFr Christian Ponder saw his first action and hit 8-15 with 2 int and a fmbl. TO's were the key as this was a close game with FSU leading 21-20 after 3Q's but TO's turned it into a 40-21 blowout.

BYU's trend of getting backdoored continued as it has happened for them in 3 straight lined games. BYU led TCU 24-15 and in the 4Q they went on a 13 play drive but settled for a 29 yd FG leaving TCU within range, 27-15. TCU was SOD at the BYU 27 (10:53) and BYU got 2 FD's and punted (6:44). TCU went 94/11pl and got a TD with 3:41 left for the backdoor cover, 27-22. TCU got it back with 2:39 left but was sk'd for a 10 yd loss to their own 24 on 4th & 8. BYU nearly got the frontdoor when a FD run got them to the 4 but they took a knee on the final 2 plays...

While Temple was happy to get their first-ever sellout the crowd of 69,029 it was made up of 90% Penn St fans. Penn St got a fortunate cover as TU missed a 24 yd FG on their opening drive, and later went on a 44/13pl drive and faked a FG and dropped a wide open TD pass. TU fmbl'd at the PSU 20 all in the 1H and only trailed 242?195 in yds but were losing 17-0. PSU only led 17-0 heading into the 4Q when they got a TD with 13:44 left and added a TD with 8:50 left for the frontdoor cover. TU went on a 14 play drive and had a 1st & goal at the 5 but fired incomplete in the EZ with 2:45 left...

Washington St left a lot of points off the board but got a 55 yd IR TD with 3:01 left for the cover. During the game WSU fmbl'd and had a 1st & goal at the SU 3 but fmbl'd. They settled for FG's from the 23, 6, 15 and 14 yd lines and they were SOD at the SU 21, 21 and 22 yd lines. WSU also fmbl'd the KO at their own 5 yd line allowing SU to score 10 points in :56 but still won 33-17 with a 561-376 yd edge...

Hawaii led Fresno St 34-16 at the half and 37-16 in the 4Q but gave up 2 TD's late in the 4Q and Fresno got the backdoor cover...

Georgia Tech only led Duke 24-17 late 2Q and 34-24 in the 4Q but got a 38 yd TD pass with 5:15 left for the frontdoor cover.

It's rare when a team can overcome a 14 point swing but NCSt actually overcame two. The Wolfpack had a 24-13 FD edge vs N Carolina. NCSt led 17-0 and had a 3rd & 6 at the NC 11 when they were not only int'd, but ret'd 93 yds for a TD and instead of leading 24-0 it was 17-7. Due to the int, NCSt had a 291-113 yd edge at the half but led just 24-10. Leading 24-20 and driving to put the game away, they were int'd again and ret'd 75 yds for a TD and stunningly trailed with 9:40 left but overcame those TO's and pulled out the win...

Memphis had a 27-16 FD edge vs S Miss. They trailed 20-14 and were driving for the lead when they were not only int'd but ret'd 82 yds for a TD and a 14 pt swing to trail 26-14 with 10:22 left. Memphis rallied for 2 TD's, the 2nd with 1:04 left to pull out the victory.

Alabama was in control vs Miss St but settled for 3 FG's and they led 9-3 when they went on a 78/15pl drive. With just :21 left in the half, they had a 3rd & goal on the 2 threatening to make it 16-3 and put the game away when they were int'd and ret'd 100 yds for a TD by Johnson and stunningly they trailed 10-9. Alabama was int'd on the 3rd play of the 3Q and MSU held on for a 17-12 win to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2000. The same year they last beat Bama and Auburn in the same season. MSU also beat Bama for the 2nd straight year.

Chase Daniel threw for 352 yds vs Texas A&M and guided Missouri to 9 wins for the first time since 1969. MO has already set a single season scoring record with 411 points and have clinched their first winning record in conf play in Pinkel's 7 seasons. Mizzou threatened the frontdoor cover late when they got a safety to go up by 14 and rec'd an onside kick at the A&M 35. They got a FD to the 17 and ran the ball 3 times but finished the game at the 10. Missouri had 555-380 yd and 32-17 FD edges.
