News and Notes - Week 10

Connecticut actually led W Virginia 13-7 at the half with a 213-112 yd edge. Donald Brown, who came in as the nation's leading rusher with 165 ypg, had just 82 incl 5 in the 2H. Once WV took the lead with 6:13 left 3Q, a pair of TO's set up 33 & 21 yd drives for TD's and they led 28-13 after 3Q's and got a TD with 3:36 left to win by 22...

Miami finished with a 448-311 yd edge but trailed almost the entire game vs Virginia. UM needed a 95/15pl drive and on 3rd & 15 got a 26 yd TD pass with :55 left to tie. UVA fmbl'd at the UM32 and UM missed a 51 yd FG on the final play of regulation. UM got a TD in OT and UVA fmbl'd after a FD run on its first play...

CM sat starting QB Dan LeFevour but backup Brian Brunner once again had an outstanding game. After leading the team to a win over W Mich at home in his first start this year, he set a school record with 485 yds passing vs Indy. It was Indy's 2nd ever loss vs a MAC school (both came TY) and the Hoosiers, who were in a bowl last season, must now win their last 3 to be bowl eligible. The two teams combined for 62 pts in the first 3Q's and 71 for the game...

led 14-0 and 21-7 but Baylor battled back to tie it at 21 in the 3Q and then 28-28 in the 4Q. MO got a 34 yd FG with 2:31 left and then Robert Griffin threw his first int of the season at his own 34 with 1:40 left and MO escaped with the 3 pt win on the road...

Oklahoma St piled up 682 yds offense, the 5th best in school history getting over their first loss of the year with a 59-17 rout of Iowa St...

Michigan/Purdue was wild. PU, with 3rd string QB Justin Siller at the helm, had a 522-306 yd edge and sent UM stumbling to its first losing season since 1967, snapping the Wolverines amazing streak of 33 straight bowl appearances. PU scored TD's on a 45 yd run and a 73 yd PR TD to lead 14-0 with just 1 FD. Michigan tied the game at 42 with 1:20 left and PU used the hook and ladder with a pass to Tardy lateralled to Orton who went 28 yds for the TD with :26 left to give PU the 6 pt win...

There was no deja vu for Alabama. Last year they lost to ULM in an SEC sandwich and even coming off a big win last week, Saban made sure they put the hammer down as they beat Ark St 35-0. It was only 10-0 at the half and Bama's last TD was set up after ASU went for it on 4th & 20. Bama had a 357-158 yd edge...

Clemson almost blew another game they had in hand. They held on however, against Boston College with a 339-236 yd edge and had a 17-0 lead at the half. In the 2H an int set up BC for a 7 yd drive for a TD. CU went on a 47 yd drive but Buchholz missed his first FG of the season. Four poss later, BC blk'd a punt and ret'd it for a TD to get back in it, 17-14 with 10:36 left. They got an int on the next play and went 21/4pl with a 4th & 4 TD pass and stunningly led 21-17. CU RB Spiller, who was out with a concussion, came back in, got a 63 yd KR. CU went 15/4pl for a TD then after BC fmbl'd, CU added a 43 yd FG with 2:46 left, 27-21. BC was SOD at their own 36...

Cal and Oregon played in weather fit for a Duck with heavy rain and a water sloshed field but it was Cal that prevailed. Cal had a 264-76 yd edge at the half and did benefit from 2 key plays. They got a 50 yd IR to the UO3 setting up a short TD with :18 left in the half and then with 8:57 left in the game, got a TD after UO fumbled the punt at its own 6 in their 26-16 win...

South Carolina got their first home win over Tennessee in 16 years, leading 21-0 at the half. They did lose starting QB Stephen Garcia to inj in the 3Q and he did not return...

There was some sentiment that Pete Carroll would take it easy on Ty Willingham after he'd been fired but USC game out with guns blazing. They had a 325-35 yd edge at the half and 18-2 FD edge with one of those FD's due to penalty for UW and their first FD was on the 6th poss. UW trailed 49-0 and went on a 92/18pl drive but was int'd in the EZ. USC not only tacked on a TD with 8:02 left, but got the ball back with 2:23 left and was still running the ball getting a FD to the 2 on the last play of the game instead of taking a knee...

Texas Tech had a dominant 1H vs Texas as they led 22-6 with a 326-108 yd edge. UT actually got their first lead of the game with 1:29 left on a TD but TT answered with a 62/6pl drive, Crabtree caught a pass at the 6, broke a tkl and took it to the EZ with :01 left. The fans stormed the field and were called for a couple of pers foul penalties and TT kicked off from the 7 but rec'd the lateral play on the KO...

Notre Dame K Brandon Walker was not the reason the Irish lost to Pitt. Walker, who was the problem early in the year (hitting 1 of his first 7 FG's) hit his first 4 att's including an outstanding 48 yarder in the 3OT. He broke a streak of 7 straight FG's with a 38 yd miss in the 4OT and ND came up short in a game of blown opportunities for the Irish...

Mississippi St had a 304-274 yd edge vs Kentucky but suffered a blk'd xp early 4Q which left them down by 1 and they missed a chip shot 27 yd FG that hit the upright with 6:56 left and lost. The win put UK in the post season and the Bulldogs will likely be home for the holidays...

BYU trailed Colorado St by 4 with 1:36 left and needed a 76 yd drive for a TD with :22 left to pull out the win. BYU did have 32-19 FD and 551-401 yd edges...

Syracuse RB Curtis Brinkley set a SU single season record with his 5th consecutive 100 yd game...

Temple suffered another hard-luck loss and Navy HC Ken Niumatalolo said "I'm kind of stunned right now. The way we won that game was just unbelievable." Navy trailed by 20 in the 4Q. They got a TD with 2:52 left to pull within 27-20 but TU got 1 FD which apparently clinched it. On 3rd & 11, however, a simple handoff up the middle was fumbled and Navy ret'd it 42 yds for a TD to tie it with :37 left. In OT TU went for it on 4th & gl at the 1 pass fell incomplete and Navy got a TD in OT for the win. Late in the 1H TU fumbled near the Navy goal line, plus dropped a TD and missed an xp, all which left Navy in the game...

Southern Miss scored their most points since beating Cal St Fullerton 70-0 in 1975. They had a 610-223 yd edge and beat UAB 70-14.

When you are playing a team like Oklahoma, turning the ball over 3 times on your first 5 offensive plays can turn the game into a nightmare. The Huskers did just that vs Oklahoma in the renewal of their rivalry and the Sooners led 28-0 just 5:23 into the game. At the half OU surprisingly only had a 305-224 yd edge despite their 49-14 lead...

WKU had a 504-387 yd edge vs N Texas but got a 14 pt swing with a 97 yd IR TD in the game's final seconds giving NT a 51-40 win...

Tulane's only TD vs LSU came on a 43 yd IR TD. TU played without its leading rusher Andre Anderson and leading rec Jeremy Williams but their D held LSU to 330 yds. LSU true frosh Jordan Jefferson took off his RS and replaced Lee with 4:08 left in the game and led the team to a TD.

The Badgers had Michigan St beaten leading 24-22. On 3rd & 1 at the MSU25 RB Clay got a 21 yd run called back on a hold and were forced to punt with 1:19 left. MSU took over at their own 17 with no time-outs and got 2 FD's to the UW31. After 2 incomplete passes and :37 left, a pass over the middle gained 4 yds. There was confusion on MSU's sideline whether to go for the FG or not. The FG unit was rushed on the field and it was hectic with only :12 left. Normally a FG unit has the full :45 to come in, get ready, have their holder set, set it back to the K, nice snap, kick, follow though and good. In this case it was chaos. UW HC Bret Bielema called time-out with :12 left to "ice" the K in the middle of a frantic moment. After another time-out to "ice" the K, MSU's K calmly lined up for a 44 yd FG at home (low crowd noise, middle of the field) the C had plenty of time snap to the holder and he kicked it though the middle of the uprights. Most likely, MSU in a hurried chaotic state, would have missed the FG and UW would have won. Instead the Badgers have their 5th loss. Bielema made another mistake with 9:19 left and UW up by 11. They were called for delay of game and Bielema was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty giving MSU 20 yds on their 64 yd drive allowing them back in the game.

Amazingly Washington St had not been shutout for a streak of 280 straight games. That streak ended 2 weeks ago when they lost to USC 69-0 and now continues as they got pounded by Stanford, 58-0, an amazing 2nd straight shutout. WSU had 2 chances to score. In the 1Q they had a FD at the 17 but had a 28 yd FG blk'd. Late 2Q they had a FD at the 14 but were int'd in the EZ. At the half SU only had a 223-188 yd edge but WSU, in a driving rainstorm with just a few thousand fans left in the stands, failed to show up in the 2H. WSU has now been outscored 350-33 in six conf games.

W Michigan could have been up by more at the half when they led 17-7 but they did need a frontdoor to cover. They led 24-10 early 4Q when EM had a 1st & gl a the WM1 and was int'd in the EZ for a TB with 7:56 left. EM's next drive was SOD at the WM40 with 4:53 left and WM got a 34 yd TD pass with 2:43 left for the frontdoor cover, 31-10. EM drove 75/7pl and had a 1st & gl at the 2 but was int'd at the 3 with 1:09 left and WM got the cover.

Georgia Tech lost starting QB Josh Nesbitt to inj while leading FSU 31-20 and their offense struggled after that...

Northwestern starting QB Bacher was out as was their top RB Sutton but backup QB Mike Kafka set a school record with 217 yds rushing for NU. The Wildcats jumped to a 10-0 lead but with the game tied at 17, Minny had the ball at its own 29 with :26 left when a pass was tipped and int'd and ret'd 48 yds for a TD by the Wildcats with :12 left to give them the 7 point win...

San Jose St QB Kyle Reed sat out the Idaho game with a bruised tailbone and Myles Eden hit 23 of 31 for 295 yds. SJSt led 30-10 in the 4Q but UI got the backdoor cover...

Arizona St looked like they had a chance to tie vs Oregon St after scoring a TD with :21 left but the 2 pt was int'd. ASU's losing streak matches a school record which was set back in 1929. OSU starting QB Lyle Moevao suffered a sore right shoulder in the 2Q and did not return.

Auburn ranks high on the season's most disappointing list. Ole Miss dominated them in the 1H with a 207-78 yd edge and led 10-0 and while Aub managed to move the ball in the 2H, Ole Miss won 17-7 with Aub being int'd at the Ole Miss 7 and 8 and running out of time at the 11 on their final 3 poss.

Colorado had a 218-76 yd edge at the half but only led 10-3 as they missed a 46 yd FG and after a 1st & gl at the 6 were int'd in the EZ. A&M dominated the 3Q with 3 TD drives of 68, 59 and 74 yds to lead 24-10 and held on for the win.

Florida St trailed GT 24-10 in the 1H and 31-20 in the 4Q but pulled to within 31-28 and was driving for the game winning TD when Marcus Sims had the ball knocked out of his hands at the GT3 on 2nd down. GT rec'd it in the EZ to hold on and GT fans poured onto the field to celebrate their first win over FSU S/'75. GT ran for 3 TD's in the 1H, the first time that's happened to FSU S/'93 (ND).

Tulsa fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and lost their chance at getting to a BCS bowl. Arkansas jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the 1Q but Tulsa's offense came alive and piled up 528 yds to Arkansas' 435. UT, trailing 30-23, got to the Ark5 at the end but their 4th down pass into the EZ was incomplete.
