Betting on the Boston College Eagles
As members of the Atlantic Coast Conference or ACC, the Boston College Eagles have created a strong tradition behind the school’s football program. The team’s strong following of fans has carried over to betting on BC games in states with legal sportsbooks.
The football program at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts dates back to the 1901 season. Playing as Independents, the Eagles went 2-7 in their first season. After a 0-9 record the following season, football was suspended until 1919. The program then took another break until 1937.
As a full-time program, the Eagles were successful right out of the gate. The team made a trip to the Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl in three of the next four seasons. Boston College finished the 1940 season as the No. 5-ranked team in the nation.
Following an extended postseason dry spell that lasted through the 1970’s, the Eagles returned to the national rankings behind head coach Jack Bicknell. His first season with the team was in 1981 and he ended his coaching career in BC’s final season as an Independent in 1990.
As members of the Big East, the Eagles were in the national rankings in seven seasons from 1991 through 2004. Notable coaches during that run were Tom Coughlin, Dan Henning and Tom O’Brian.
Moving to its current home in the ACC in 2005, one of Boston College’s most successful seasons ever was in 2007. The Eagles soared to No. 2 in the nation before finishing that campaign 11-3 as the No. 10 team in the Associated Press final Top 25.
The Eagles’ most notable player throughout the storied history of the football program was quarterback Doug Flutie. For his efforts under center, he was named college football’s most outstanding player in 1984 as the school’s only Heisman Trophy winner.
BC went 10-2 that season and it went on to win the Cotton Bowl by beating Houston 45-28. The Eagles were ranked No. 5 in the final AP poll.
First playing in the Big East and now the ACC, Boston College has formed some great rivalries up and down the East Coast. As a Catholic University, the ongoing rivalry against Notre Dame tops the list.
Betting the OVER on a 50-point total line between Boston College and Notre Dame, these two rivals would have to score 51 points or more combined to cash a winner on that wager.
Betting in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is just one of two New England states without laws for legally betting on sports. However, that may change if state lawmakers can reach a compromise on the necessary legislation. Bills have passed in both the state House and Senate as support continues to grow for changing the current laws.
