Betting on the Syracuse Orange

With roots deep in East Coast college football, the Syracuse Orange have found the perfect home in the Atlantic Coast Conference in recent years. As members of the ACC, the Orange have a large contingent of fans and sports bettors alike on a national level.

The football program at Syracuse is one of the oldest in the nation going back to 1899. Frank Wade was the team’s first head coach and the Orange went an even 4-4 that season. Syracuse played football as an Independent all the way up to 1991 when the team joined the Big East.

The program’s first extended successful run was in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Under head coach Ben Schwartzwalder, the Orange were nationally ranked 13 times from 1952 through the 1973 season. To this day, he remains the longest tenured head coach in the history of football at Syracuse.

More recently, Dick MacPherson and Paul Pasqualoni each had successful runs with Syracuse as the team’s head coach. The Orange were ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press Top 25 in 1987. They reached No. 6 in the final rankings in 1992.

Leaving the Big East in 2012, Syracuse has found a permanent home in the ACC. The Orange made some noise in the national rankings in 2018 (No. 15) and 2019 (No. 21) with Dino Barbers as head coach.

First playing in the Big East and now in the ACC, Syracuse has formed some great rivalries along the way. Pittsburgh, Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech are also former Big East teams playing in the ACC.

Syracuse plays in the ACC Atlantic Division against the Clemson Tigers as a bona fide national power. If you wanted to bet on the Orange as 10-point road underdogs against Clemson, they would have to lose that game by nine or fewer points to cover with the point spread.

Betting in New York

Sports betting in New York has been legal since 2019. However, it was restricted to retail sportsbooks located in upstate casinos. State lawmakers decided to expand the industry with legal online sports betting in 2021. Going through the regulatory process, legal sports betting through mobile sportsbooks in New York started in January of 2022.

Despite the fact that the Empire State now has both retail and mobile sports betting, it remains illegal to wager on in-state college teams such as the Syracuse Orange. During the season, Orange football fans can bet on the games in states with the proper sports betting laws in place.
