At the Gate – Sunday

Jay’s Way pulled off the mild upset in the Sunshine Millions Classic yesterday at Gulfstream Park, holding off the chalk Mr. Jordan by a half-length, returning $10.00 and topping a $2 exacta that paid $27.60.

I knew Mr. Jordan would get beat but elected to go with Richard the Great, who faded to finish fourth at 3-1.

We did have the winner of the Turf, Galleon Mast ($4.60) getting the job done with a $13.40 exacta.

My second choice Starship Jubilee ($4.00) won the Filly & Mare Turf and we had the exacta ($14.60) and trifecta ($39.10).

The last of the four stakes was won by my top pick X Y Jet ($3.60) with the puny exacta coming back at $10.00.

It was a pretty chalky day at Aqueduct as well, with only Devine Dental ($43.40) paying double digits. Every other winner on the card paid $9.00 or less.

We had two of them, Spieth paying $8.00 in the seventh topping a decent exacta that paid us $32.40 and Valyrian winning the nightcap at $8.80.

It looks as if we have a better shot at some prices coming in on Sunday at the Big A.

Here is the opening race from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Md $50,000 (12:20 ET)
#3 Heyitsnricopalazo 2-1
#8 Theresa's Boy 6-1
#5 Merger of Banks 5-2
#4 The Mason Factor 4-1

Analysis: Heyitsnricopalazo
is one of two firsters in here sent out by the Englehart barn that is 15% winners (with a +ROI) with first timers. The colt is by Emcee out of a Speightstown mare who has dropped one runner, no winners to date. The colt debuts with lasix and has solid looking works. It's not a real tough looking spot.

Theresa's Boy makes his first start since his debut last July against state bred maiden special weight foes where he was sent off at 19-1 and was not a threat in a seventh-place finish. He drops in for a tag for his return and has a solid looking work tab. The Contessa barn is 9% winners with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff. The $25,000 purchase is the first foal to race out of a Bernardini mare.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 8 The Ladies Handicap (3:50 ET)
#5 Sherini 4-1
#4 Crimson Frost 5-2
#7 Bombshell 9-2
#2 Just Got Out 3-1

Analysis: Sherini
prompted the early pace and finished up well to beat Alw-1 foes last out at Laurel Park off a 14-month layoff. The runner up Frisky Warrior came back to beat Alw-1 foes in her next start on Dec. 18. The mare now steps up into stakes company for the first time inner career and she figures to move forward off her last effort. She has a nice pedigree, by Bernardini out of the stakes placed Oatsee ($106,945) and she broke her maiden at the Spa at nine furlongs. If Motion sees fit to step her up she likely is ready for the class hike. Crimson Frost was not a threat last out in a sixth-place finish in the Thirty Eight Go Go at Laurel Park going a one turn mile. Two back she ran well in a runner up finish against Alw-2 optional claimers over the main track here at a mile. The winner was Divine Miss Grey.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 8 Clm $16,000N3L (3:35 ET)
#8 Immunity 10-1
#11 Ray's the Bar 9-5
#2 Front Line Paige 6-1
#4 Tonedaddy 8-1

Analysis: Immunity
drops from $30,000 to $16,000 for his second start since landing with the Eppler barn. Last out the gelding was outrun early and not a threat in a seventh-place finish. Three back over yielding ground this guy was a good second against $25,000 starter optional claimers at Laurel Park. Rosario picks up the call and willing to give this guy another look here as he is going to be a decent price.

Ray's the Bar had a tough spot last out and tracked the early pace, grabbed the lead and got nailed late by a neck in a game runner up finish against $25,000 non-winners of two. He drops in for $16,000 for former Chad Brown assistant Abreu and draws another tough post. Ortiz was aboard two back where he ran a good second against open $25,000 claimers at the Big A off a 2 1/2-month break. He fits in this spot but is going to be a light price.
