At the Gate – Thursday

We have a heck of a busy Saturday upon us with 10 graded stakes including a pair of Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” races.

I’ll try to get to as many as I can for Saturday’s Best Plays Report and one I’ll definitely include is the $1 million Queen’s Plate from Woodbine. A field of 16 will line up in the first jewel of Canada’s Triple Crown.

One of the supporting stakes on the card is the $250,000 Highlander (G1) which is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

The other “Win and You’re In’ race on Saturday is the $250,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (G2) at Gulfstream Park with the winner stamping a ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1).

There are three stakes at Churchill Downs including the $100,000 Bashford Manor (G3) for two-year-olds. The highlight at Monmouth Park is the $300,000 United Nations (G1) for three-year-old and upward going 1 3/8 miles on grass.

And at our stomping grounds at Belmont Park we have the $250,000 Mother Goose (G2) for three-year-old fillies on the main track and $100,000 Perfect Sting for fillies and mares going a mile on the turf.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $14,000N3L (1:30 ET)
#3 Ribbonite 6-5
#4 Jump for Joy 5-2
#5 Caoimhe 12-1
#1 Asian's Way 2-1

Analysis: Ribbonite took the field gate to wire to beat $25,000 non-winners of two last out in her second start off the claim by the Gargan barn. Two back in her first go for the barn she dueled for the early lead and weakened to finish fourth against state bred Alw-1 foes in a race taken off the turf. She owns a solid pace profile throughout and she looks well spotted here dropping in for $14,000 but stepping up a condition to the non-winners of three level. The day could get off to a chalky start. Not crazy about her 0 for 4 mark on wet tracks as there is some rain in the forecast.

Jump for Joy pressed the early pace and finished gamely to prevail by a neck over $16,000 non-winners of two last out. She was making her second start off nearly a three-month break. She is also 0 for 4 on wet tracks but does have a second and a third.

Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 7-5 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 Md $75,000 (5:44 ET)
#6 Special Trip 5-2
#2 Equal Rights 9-2
#3 Supercommittee 4-1
#1 Darling of the Spa 6-1

Analysis: Special Trip drops in for a tag for the first time here for former Chad Brown assistant Jorge Abreu. The filly was beaten just a nose two back in a tough beat at Gulfstream Park. last out she prompted the early pace and weakened to finish fifth here. The winner Complicit came back to bet Alw-1 company in her next outing on June 14. The $75,000 Keeneland purchase drops in for a tag for the first time here. She is out of a Tabasco Cat mare that has dropped five winners and three have won on turf, top earner stakes winner Tell a Kelly ($274,610).

Equal Rights is one of two in here sent out by Brown. The filly was fourth in her debut at Gulfstream Park in February against maiden special weight company and dropped in for a $75,000 tag last out where she pressed the early pace and weakened to finish fourth as the beaten favorite over good ground. She is out of the stakes winner Be Fair ($313,517) who has dropped three winners and two have won on turf. She looks as if she still has some upside, seemed to handle the good ground okay and she may catch less than firm conditions again here.
