At the Gate – Sunday

Things worked out nicely for us at Aqueduct on Saturday with five winners on top on the nine-race card while the four races in my Best Plays from Gulfstream Park produced just one exacta.

The winners at the Big A paid $3.70, $10.00, $9.40, $6.70 and $21.60. The biggest price was Malibu Action in the nightcap, and we knocked down the $2 exacta cold for $99.00 and the trifecta for $1 that paid $208.50, a nice way to end the day.

I had the wrong Todd Pletcher trainee in the Hal’s Hope (G3) at Gulfstream Park. I went with Copper Town who got bounced around early and still managed to hang on to the runner up spot.

Prince Lucky got the job done and paid $17.60 and he was my fifth choice. I actually thought he might take more action than he did, and he was a nice overlay that we whiffed on.

The $2 Pletcher exacta paid $64.60.

Here is the opening race from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Md Sp Wt (12:50 ET)
#4 Iona Mobe 7-2
#1 Master Distiller 3-5
#3 Lonhtwist 3-1
#5 Gongheifatchoy 15-1

Analysis: Iona Mobe dueled for the early lead while along a rail that a bit deep and he faded to finish a well beaten sixth. Two back he had the lead heading for home but weakened to finish third, 2 1/2 lengths back of the chalk in here. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers and he is bred to like a wet track. If he can get a good jump on the chalk, he may be able to turn the tables here.

Master Distiller stalked the early pace and came with a good late rally to just miss by a neck last out. The gelding has three starts and has landed in the bottom half of the exacta in each outing. He is in good hands with former Pletcher assistant DePaz but the price sure is going to be puny. He is the first foal to race out of a Eurosilver mare and has a decent enough off-track pedigree.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 1,4 / 1,3,4
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 7 OClm $25,000N1X (3:55 ET)
#7 Calculated Risker 4-1
#4 Battle of Saratoga 9-5
#6 Broadway Bay 9-2
#5 Holy Week 10-1

Analysis: Calculated Risker tracked the early pace and weakened to finish sixth last out behind a couple of foes he runs into again here, a dull effort for the beaten chalk. Perhaps a wet track will get him back on track as he has won 4 of 6 on off going and we likely see some moisture in the racing surface this afternoon. His last win came last summer at the Spa at nine furlongs over a sloppy main track. against state bred Alw-2 optional claimers.

Battle of Saratoga came off the layoff to break his maiden last out in a sharp effort, drawing away to win by a dozen lengths over four foes The Motion trainee does not need to move forward much off his maiden score to win right back and does not catch a very imposing looking group here in his first start against winners. By Union Rags out of a Distorted Humor mare, he is bred to handle a wet track as well.
