At the Gate – Wednesday

After a two-day hiatus we are back in action at Saratoga on Wednesday, the feature the $100,000 Bolton Landing for juvenile fillies going 5 ½ furlongs on turf.

The race drew a field of seven led by the 3-5 morning line favorite Kimari who is going to be very tough to beat.

She was beaten just a head in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at Ascot in her last outing in a field of 25. Wesley Ward trains the filly, who broke her maiden on dirt at Keeneland by 15 lengths in her debut.

Post positions were drawn yesterday for Saturday’s $1 million Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar. The race is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

The race drew a field of 10 older runners that will travel 1 ¼ miles in the marquee race of the Del Mar meeting. There are four supporting stakes on Saturday’s card including the $250,000 Del Mar Handicap (G2) which is a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).

Seeking the Soul was installed as the 3-1 morning line favorite for the Pacific Classic. The Dallas Stewart trainee is coming off a win in the Stephen Foster (G1) at Churchill Downs in his last outing.

Pavel is the second choice on the morning line at 7-2. Trained by Doug O’Neill, the five-year-old was third in the Suburban (G2) at Belmont Park last out.;

The third choice at 9-2 is Quip, who was a neck behind the favorite in the Foster last out. The Rodolphe Brisset trainee won the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in his previous start.

I will have selections for the Del Mar stakes action in Saturday’s Best Plays Report.

Here is the second race (the opener is a jump race) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Md Sp Wt (1:22 ET)
#3 Dan the Man Can 9-2
#5 Beyond Gone 1-1
#2 More Thunder 4-1
#1 Montana Man 6-1

Analysis: Dan the Man Can showed good early speed in his debut on the main track here two back before weakening to finish third. He regressed second out but that was on turf. He is back on dirt here for his third start at the meeting and adds lasix. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers and looks capable of beating the chalk in here if he moves forward off his debut effort on the main track. He is the first foal to race out of a half Ours mare.

Beyond Gone is the obvious one to beat in here. The colt had to steady shortly after the break, tracked our top pick, got to the front but got run down and had to settle for the runner up spot. The McPeek barn is 17% winners with second out maidens. The $40,000 purchase is out of a Gone West mare that has dropped seven other foals to race with five winners.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 7 The Bolton Landing (4:02 ET)
#5 Kimari 3-5
#4 Abscond 4-1
#1 Vast 5-1
#6 Champagne Humor 8-1

Analysis: Kimari broke her maiden on the main track at Keeneland by 15 lengths and earned a strip to Ascot. The filly missed by just a head in a runner up finish in a 25-horse field in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) where it rained and the turf came up mostly soft. She lays over this field here for the Ward barn that is 23% winners overall in turf sprints. The barn is not having a great meet by his standards, hitting with just 3 of 25 started but this gal looks really tough at a puny price.

Abscond put in a game effort in her maiden score in her debut at Ellis Park. She stalked the early pace, made a good middle move and held on gamely to prevail by a head. The runner up Ask Bailey came back to graduate in her next outing on Aug. 11 at Ellis Park. She is in good hands with the Kenneally barn that has good numbers with juveniles and in turf sprints.
