Betting on the BYU Cougars

The BYU Cougars have enjoyed a long history of success on the football field as a top-flight national program. However, in the absence of any legal gaming in Utah, the team’s betting base remains concentrated in states with legal sportsbooks.

BYU Cougars Team Overview

Brigham Young University in Provo initiated the football program at the school in 1922. The Cougars went 1-5 that season as members of the Rocky Mountain Conference (RMC). They remained members of that conference until 1937.

After spending seven seasons in the Mountain States Athletic Conference (MSAC), BYU opted to join the Skyline Conference in 1948. Other teams in that football conference included Utah and Utah State as in-state rivals.

In 1962, the Cougars joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). In 1974 with LaVell Edwards as head coach, they qualified for the Fiesta Bowl as the No. 17 team in the national rankings. He coached the team from 1972 until 2000.

During his 28-year tenure, BYU was nationally ranked in 12 final Associated Press Top 25 listings. Edwards’ best year at the helm was in 1984 when BYU won the college football national championship with a perfect 13-0 record.

BYU moved to the Mountain West Conference in 1999 before becoming an Independent program for football in 2011. Along with Notre Dame, BYU remains the most prominent football program in the nation without a designated conference.

The Cougars have continued their tradition of excellence on the football field in recent years. Kalani Sitake joined the program in 2016 as head coach. His team was ranked No. 11 in the final AP Top 25 in 2020. BYU went 10-3 in 2021 to finish No. 19 in the final poll.

One of BYU’s most famous players was NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young. As a descendant of Brigham Young himself, Steve had a stellar career with the Cougars from 1981 to 1983. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting in his final college season.

Quarterback Ty Detmer is BYU’s only Heisman Trophy winner in team history. He won that honor as the most outstanding player in 1990.

Playing as an Independent has created a number of different rivalries over the years. One of the biggest games of the season is against the arch rival Utah Utes. Legal bets on this game tend to lean towards the OVER on the total line.

If the total was set at 52 points, the Cougars and the Utes would have to score more than 52 points combined to win a wager on the OVER.

Betting on the BYU Cougars in Utah

While more and more states are offering legal sports betting within their borders, the winds of change are not blowing in Utah. With a strong Mormon presence, gambling in any form in this state is expected to remain prohibited for the foreseeable future. If you do find yourself in a state with legal betting, try PointsBet:

Fortunately, BYU football fans can still bet on their favorite team in any other state offering legal sportsbooks. Betting on sports in Utah remains illegal.
