Betting on the Georgia Bulldogs

As one of the most popular college football teams in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Georgia Bulldogs’ fan base expands well beyond Georgia state lines. Betting on the Bulldogs has become equally as popular in states with legal sportsbooks.

Georgia Bulldogs Team Overview

The football program at the University of Georgia dates back to 1902. Until 1921, the team played as an Independent ahead of formal conferences in the nation. From 1921 through the 1932 season, Georgia was a member of the Southern Conference.

The SEC dates back to 1932 with the Georgia Bulldogs as a charter member. The first season of play was in 1933 with the Bulldogs going 8-2 that season.

With Wallace Butts as head coach, Georgia went 9-1-1 in 1941 followed by an 11-1 record the next season. That marked a turning point in the program as a national power. In 1946, the Bulldogs posted a perfect 11-0 mark with a victory in that season’s Sugar Bowl. The were ranked No. 3 in the nation in the final Associated Press Top 25.

Vince Dooley took over the reins as head coach in 1964 and led the team to the Sun Bowl in his first season. During his long tenure with Georgia that lasted until 1988, Dooley is best known for leading the Bulldogs to a college football national title in 1980. The team went a perfect 12-0 that season and won the Sugar Bowl.

Georgia’s highest season-ending ranking since that 1980 national championship run was No. 2 in the nation in 2007. Mark Richt was the head coach of that team.

More recently, the Bulldogs claimed their second college football championship in 2021 by beating the archrival Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2022 College Football Playoff Championship Game.

One of the most famous players in Georgia Bulldogs’ history was running back Herschel Walker. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 as the nation’s most outstanding player.

Playing in the SEC, Georgia has formed strong rivalries against other conference members such as Florida and South Carolina along with Alabama.

Legal betting on the Bulldogs is big as home favorites using the posted college football point spread for a game. Playing in Athens, if the Bulldogs were favored by seven points at home on the spread against Florida, they would have to win that game by eight points or more to win that bet.

Betting on the Georgia Bulldogs in Georgia

Betting on sports remains illegal in the state of Georgia. However, ongoing efforts by state lawmakers are underway to change the current situation. The state Senate is in favor of passing the proper legislation putting the fate of legal sports betting in the hands of the Georgia House.
