If Orb manages to win the Preakness Stakes next Saturday he will have a new foe to worry about in the Belmont Stakes (G1) after Freedom Child trounced the field in the Peter Pan (G2) at Belmont Park on Saturday.
The Tom Albertrani trainee was off just a beat slow, was sent up to set the early fractions over the sloppy going and opened up turning for home, rolling to a 13 ¼ length victory, stopping the timer in 1:49.09 for the 1 1/8 miles.
“I was very pleased to see him win like that,” Albertrani stated after the race. “I didn’t think he would actually draw away by that many lengths. Once I saw him on the lead like that I was pretty confident at the half-mile pole by the way he was traveling.”
The colt took four tries to break his maiden, and was off poorly in the Wood Memorial (G1) on April 8 in his stakes debut, never a threat in a tenth place finish.
There is no doubt he loved the off going, but will he really be a threat in the Belmont Stakes?
The colt did take full advantage of a racing strip that was strongly favoring inside speed. On the ten race card six races were won by runners that went gate to wire.
Last November in his second career start the colt checked in second behind Orb in the maiden ranks, beaten two lengths for the top spot.
The colt I thought might be a Belmont candidate was the well-bred Incognito, who never really threatened in a fifth place finish. The colt did race against the bias, so he may still be heard from yet.

Here is today’s opening from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:
BEL Race 1 Clm $20,000B (1:05 ET)
13 Seven Dreams 8-5
8 Honorable Pass 5-2
12 Thetrainwasgone 8-1
7 Red Hook 10-1
Analysis: Seven Dreams gets the call and I am assuming we are going to be off the turf again today. Our top pick is coming off a win last out against $12,500 non-winners of two or three year olds on the main track at Aqueduct. The sixth place finisher Awesome Island came back to beat $4,500 non-winners of three in her next start at Finger Lakes on April 27. Our top pick was claimed out of her last start by the Ness barn that is 38% winners first off the claim. She has a win over the main track here and looks capable of moving forward with the barn switch and winning her third in a row.
Honorable Pass makes her first start since February where the filly dueled for the early lead and faded to finish seventh against $25,000 at Gulfstream Park in the slop. She was claimed out of the race by the Maker barn that is 26% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. She comes in here off works over the poly at Keeneland and should be fit and ready off the nearly three month break. Maker is off to a good start at the meeting here, winning with four of his first nine starters.
WIN: #13 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 8,13 / 7,8,12,13
TRI: 8,13 / 7,8,12,13 / 4,7,8,12,13
Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 9 OClm $14,000N1X (5:17 ET)
3 Yampa River 10-1
9 Delta Doyenne 3-1
2 Another Page 5-2
10 She's Stones Sis 7-2
Analysis: Yampa River invades from Florida where last out the filly dueled for the early lead and weakened to finish fourth against straight three year olds fillies for a $25,000 tag. She makes her third start off a 3 1/2 month break and will be facing state breds for the first time in her career. She looks primed for a top effort here and her 10-1 morning line looks generous.
Delta Doyenne was a good looking maiden winner last out for a $50,000 tag in her second career start. The third place finisher in the race was Riptherubberoff, who came back to graduate for a $20,000 tag in her next outing on May 11. She showed a major improvement over her debut where she checked in fourth behind Lovely Syn, who came back to beat state bred Alw-1 foes and then take a NY Stallion Series race in her next two outing. She is in good hands with the Tony D. barn.
WIN: #3 to win at 9-2 or better.
EX: 3,9 / 2,3,9,10
TRI: 3,9 / 2,3,9,10 / 2,3,5,9,10
Today's Featured Race of the Day from Churchill Downs:
CD Race 9 Md Sp Wt (4:59 ET)
6 Uno Duo 5-2
7 Sweet Kate 4-1
8 Wake Up 3-1
1 Mahna 4-1
Analysis: Uno Duo made a mild late rally to finish third in her debut at Tampa Bay Downs as the 9-5 favorite. The runner up Pass Me a Bottle came back to graduate in her next outing on May 4 at Tampa versus maiden special weight company. Mott does not win first out often and this gal should move forward off that debut. She has five sibs that are winners including stakes winner Etoile Montante ($659,277).
Sweet Kate returns to dirt after dueling for the early lead and fading to finish a well beaten tenth on turf going a mile. Three runners have come out of that race to win next out including the winner Bella Castani, who won the Tweedside in her next start on April 27 at Belmont Park. She put in a near bullet drill over the main track here. She is out of the stakes winner Katerbeg ($119,152).
WIN: #6 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 6,7 / 1,6,7,8
TRI: 6,7 / 1,6,7,8 / 1,2,6,7,8
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
